Jose's obituary

Dr. Jose Antonio Adura Miranda (1944 – 2024)

Jose Antonio Adura Miranda passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, November 17, 2024. He was 80 years old. He leaves behind his loving wife, Mariza Souza; his children, Andrea, Patricia (Levi), Michael (Ana), and Joseph; step children, Paula, Marcia, and Mario. Jose will be missed by his family, extended family, and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Lia, (d. 1989), his parents, Elisabeth (nee Adura) and Hermes Miranda, and cherished “Tia” Maria Nascimento.

Jose was born in 1944 in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Jose fondly recalled playing soccer in the streets with a soccer ball made up of socks contributed by each neighborhood kid. He practised to become a pianist but studied medicine “in case that didn’t work out”. The first time he met Lia, she was sitting on the floor of a meeting room, working, and when she looked up at him, he said that she knew that “she was the one”. They stood against the military dictatorship together, along with their friends, whom they remained in touch with throughout the years.

They eventually moved to Montreal, Canada where Jose recalled that they arrived with “$800 in their pocket and 6 months to learn French” before their entrance exams to complete their schooling. Jose would later share with his children that his time in Canada was one of the happiest times in his life. He completed his medical studies and residency in neurology in Montreal, Canada. He would often reminisce about the exuberance of the summers after the harsh Quebec winters and the joy of seeing the city alive with festivals.

Jose eventually settled his family practice in San Jose, California where he served the Portuguese community for over 40 years. He enjoyed his time answering the community’s questions on a local Portuguese radio station. He eventually retired after a long and successful medical career.

In 2012, Jose met Mariza and they were married in 2015. They traveled the world, enjoyed opera, theatre, music, Italian food, and spending time together. Jose entered his final years happy and well cared for. He will be missed.

A service for Jose will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 13716 Saratoga Avenue in Saratoga, CA on Tuesday, December 10th at 10:00 am.
