Jon was born on January 10, 1954 in Minneapolis, the elder son of William and Gina Ridge. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, son, uncle, cousin, and friend. Jon is survived by his wife, Judi; his children, Isaak and Olivia; his siblings, Rebecca and Aaron; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Jon dedicated his life to nonprofit organizations connected to outdoor recreation. He attended Totino-Grace High School, where he won a state championship in wrestling. In 1977, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Public Health. He went on to lead environmental Winter Treks for the American Lung Association, taking groups of adventurers to Alaska, Baffin Island, China, and Siberia.
He proudly founded the Great River Ride bicycle tour, raising funds for the American Lung Association through a multi-day trip along the Mississippi River. He also founded the Tour de Pines in Itasca State Park and hosted the Minnesota Ironman Bike Ride, both supporting Hostelling International. In 2005, he earned his Master’s Degree in Nonprofit Management from Hamline University. For 24 years, he served Hostelling International as an Executive Director and later as Vice President of the Central Region. In these roles, he fostered community and cultural exchange through a shared love of the outdoors.
As an avid outdoor enthusiast and paddler, Jon spent his life connected to the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota. He advocated for Save the BWCA and served on the Board of Camp Widjiwagan to encourage the next generation of stewards. He also cherished time spent at Lake George, his family’s gathering place.
Jon’s optimism and warmth made an impression on all who knew him. He will be remembered for his big laugh, positivity, gregarious nature, service to others, and his loving devotion to his family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Save the BWCA, Hostelling International, or The Church of St. Cecilia in Jon’s honor.
