Jocelyn's obituary

Jocelyn Nydam Redfern

Nov. 4, 1977 - June 23, 2024

Jocelyn Redfern died June 23, 2024 at the Hospice of Kona in Hawaii, attended on by her husband, Xander. Jocelyn was diagnosed with a squamous cell carcinoma in September 2023. Despite a reputation for surviving exotic illnesses like the bubonic plague and scurvy, and surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments, the cancer metastasized. She was 46 years old.

A precocious and academically gifted child, Jocelyn read voraciously. She graduated from Manitou Springs High School, president of the class of 1995. Determined to leave her small Colorado hometown behind her, she attended McGill University in Montreal, and then Columbia University in New York, where she studied religion and theology.

Jocelyn traveled widely, living in Canada, Ireland, Taiwan, and China. She cherished her time living in New York City, where she rose through the corporate ranks of Maritime Reporter Magazine, serving as marketing manager.

In 2005, Jocelyn began dating Xander, who she often described as “the love of my life.” In 2010, much to Jocelyn’s chagrin, they returned to Manitou Springs with their two children, Ezekiel and Malachi.

Despite her disdain for her hometown, Jocelyn served on the board of the Manitou Springs Women’s Club, which combined her love of old ladies with her talent for nurturing close friendships. Jocelyn was known among the women of Manitou and Colorado Springs for her invitational Wednesday night gatherings, at her home, at Tony’s Bar, and later at the studio she shared with artist Lorelei Beckstrom in the Saks Building in downtown Colorado Springs. Jocelyn would personally curate the guest-lists, bringing together women from all walks of life to laugh, vent, celebrate, and comfort each other. She was a lifeline for her friends, offering support during accidents, illnesses, the travails of motherhood, and other difficult moments in life.

In 2021, Jocelyn left her corporate job and launched her own company, Fox & Shrew, with the goal of producing one of a kind dresses and skirts — with pockets! — handmade by skilled artisans in Colorado. With local seamstress Heather Clark, Jocelyn wrote an entire technical manual for each of the Fox & Shrew garments, and then sourced local women to produce them according to her specifications. Jocelyn and Fox & Shrew were featured in the Colorado Springs Business Journal, the Colorado Springs Gazette, and she appeared on the Sustainably LB podcast. Her dresses are currently being sold by Flying Solo, a New York fashion boutique.

Jocelyn is survived by her husband Xander, her children Zeke and Chi, her parents JoAnne and John Pearring, her brother Jeff Pearring, and her sisters Jillian, Julia, Judith, and Jenelle Pearring.
