Jerry's obituary
Jerry Hogan, who began his journey in Ohio, found his roots in Guam, and eventually settled in Orlando after retirement, passed away August 16, swathed in the love of his family.
Jerry was an educator, an attorney, a collegiate athlete, and a soccer fan. But the role that he cherished most was that of dad. His legacy of fairness, wisdom, and devotion to family will be cherished by his children Patrick Hogan, Jeremy Hogan, Kelly Hogan Morphy, Ha’Ani Hogan and Tasi Hogan. To them, Dad … Daddyo … Papa Bear was a source of strength, guidance, and unconditional love, and he will be profoundly missed.
Throughout his life, Jerry volunteered his time to coach fencing, debate, soccer and mock trial teams. He fell in love with soccer when his kids started playing The Beautiful Game. He was a fan from-the-start of the Orlando City and Orlando Pride men’s and women’s professional soccer teams, and was proud to have held season tickets for each team from their formation until his final day.
Jerry competed in the early 1960s as an NCAA Div. 1 fencer at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH. Later that decade, he taught social studies, civics and government at Miamisburg Middle School in Miamisburg, OH; Roth High School in Dayton, OH; and Agat Junior High School in Agat, Guam. He then went to law school at the Salmon P. Chase College of Law at Northern Kentucky University. He worked as a lawyer for the Public Defender in Dayton and the Law Clinic at University of Dayton. Back on Guam starting in the early 1980s, he worked for the Guam Office of the Attorney General and the law firms of Ferenz Williams and Mair, Mair Hogan & Spade, before co-founding the Hogan & Link and the Hogan & Bronze law firms. He then served as legal counsel for the Guam Civil Service Commission before retiring in 2000.
Jerry received compassionate care and support during his final months from his children and his former wife Vera Hogan. He also was comforted by his brother Patrick J. Hogan, and numerous friends who treated him like family. Jerry’s beloved fur-baby, Bosley, will miss their daily walks and the familiar question, "Wanna go for a ride?"
In honor of Jerry's life, the Hogan family will hold a private celebration in Florida on September 15. For those wishing to offer a gesture of condolence, the family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, consideration be given to donating to the memorial fund that will support three causes dear to Jerry's heart, including education, the study of law, and retaining dignity at the end of life. The fund will go toward support for the University of Guam Endowment Foundation, a scholarship for young people to become paralegals, and the non-profit organization Florida Death with Dignity.
