Jeremy's obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Jeremy Newman. Born on December 5, 1976, Jeremy departed this world on July 22, 2023. He died in Franklin, TN while undergoing treatment at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center. His absence leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, yet they are consoled by the positive impact he made during his time here.

Jeremy is survived by his loving wife, Sherri Newman, whom he cherished dearly and often credited as the creator of his favorite meals. He is also survived by his daughters, Brooke Hall (Steven), as well as by his adoring mother, Linda Moore and step-father Paul Moore Jr., and brother, Paul "Trey" Moore III. His significantly older step-sister, Mary Beth Pellegrino (Glenn), step-brother Matt Chambers (Bry), step-sister Kat Kessel Chambers, and parents-in-law John and Verna Stickles. He also had numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews will miss him. Jeremy is preceded in death by his father, Steven Newman and step-mother Carol Jean Newman.

A man of simple pleasures, Jeremy found joy in moments that many take for granted. He reveled in the refreshing taste of “delicious” Miller Lite, the complexities of Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, and delighted in the powerful narratives of books like Guns, Germs, and Steel, as well as anything related to World War 1.

Jeremy was a music enthusiast who loved all live performances. He was a musician who played trumpet for John Adams Jr. High School and George Washington High School. While there, he was selected as and a member of the All Kanawah County Band.

For Jeremy, cinema and television were not just a pastime, but a source of intrigue and intellectual engagement. He was a devout fan of the shows “Succession” and “Silo”.  “True Romance” was a film that held a special place in his heart, due in no small part to its poignant depiction of undying love. As an avid sports fan, he was a staunch supporter of the Los Angeles Dodgers and had a special affinity for teams featuring former UK basketball players (except for the Boston Celtics). He was even a member of the Bethany College Fall Baseball Team, where he  also served as team Chaplin.

His recreational pursuits varied from engaging card games like Rummy to the immersive adventures in the massively multiplayer online role-playing game, “World of Warcraft.” Jeremy strove to have a healthy body, mind, and spirit. He worked to get fit by lifting weights and walking to work every day. This determination led to his losing 100 pounds in a year. He also had an obsession with making sure his lawn was freshly manicured at all times. Jeremy loved to travel. His favorite destinations were Disney World and the beach, reveling in the magic and tranquillity they offered. A very special trip to Italy in 2022 was also at the top of the list.

Locally, he cherished his time anywhere he could be in fellowship with  friends or family. He was a member of The Cathedral of Christ the King, finding peace in attending mass whenever he was able. He was an ardent supporter of St. Jude's, The Sierra Club and women's rights, reflecting his generous and compassionate nature. Jeremy had a special love for the color green, which was the color for Bethany College, where he graduated in 1999 with a double major in Religious Studies and English.

Jeremy's personality can best be described as enthusiastic, kind and generous. His mantra was a simple but profound one, "You are loved, you are loved, you are loved." He fervently believed in this message and made sure to remind others of it.

Jeremy Newman was a beacon of love and kindness who left an indelible mark on all who met him. He will be profoundly missed. His memory will live on in the hearts and minds of those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Celebrations of life will be held in Charleston, WV and Lexington, KY at a later date.
