Jennifer's obituary
Jennifer Suzanne Foster, a beloved educator, wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away on April 28, 2025, in Berkeley, California, after a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Jennifer is survived by her loving husband Mark, children Matthew and Justine, daughter-in-law Emma, and grandchildren Judah and Haven.
Jennifer's life was characterized by joy, kindness, and compassion. She dedicated her life to education, serving as an exemplary teacher at Rancho Medanos Junior High School for 11 years, where she was known for her unwavering dedication to her students and innovative teaching methods. Prior to her tenure at Rancho Medanos, Jennifer was a devoted homeschool educator for her own children and others in her community.
Colleagues remember Jennifer as a person of exceptional integrity and work ethic. Her classroom was a sanctuary for students seeking a calm space during lunch periods, and she regularly provided healthy snacks from her own resources for students in need. Jennifer believed deeply in understanding "the whole child," recognizing that students' fundamental needs for food, safety, belonging, and self-esteem must be met before learning could begin.
A lifelong learner herself, Jennifer pursued numerous professional development opportunities through prestigious institutions including UC Berkeley, Stanford University, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the Smithsonian, and the Exploratorium. She generously shared her knowledge with colleagues, believing that well-educated teachers were essential to developing students' highest abilities.
Jennifer's leadership extended beyond the classroom. She founded the Games Club and Army of the Earth club, served on the School Site Council, and co-founded Pittsburg Sustainable Unified—a 29+ member liaison connecting city, county, and school district personnel. Her environmental initiatives led to her school winning the Most Improved School award in a county energy contest.
Jennifer had a gift for advocating respectfully for causes she believed in, particularly student safety and equity in education. Her classroom was a place where all students received accommodations tailored to their individual needs while maintaining high educational expectations. She maintained regular communication with students' families, focusing on progress, needs, and growth to support student success.
Jennifer Foster's legacy lives on in the countless students whose lives she touched and the colleagues she inspired with her compassion, knowledge, determination, and respect for others. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, colleagues, and the entire educational community she served so faithfully.
Memorial services will be held at 20 Red Coach Lane, Orinda, CA on Saturday, June 14th at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a local women's shelter or rescue mission.
