Remembering Momma

Our dear momma lit up our lives like she lit up the room upon her entrance with her beautiful smile, contagious laugh, and gregarious personality. We are privileged to have been showered with love by a person who knew from an early age that she wanted to be a mother. As her children, we feel honored to have received her love and devotion. She brought us happiness and made life fun.

Momma had a strong bond with her family. She was born on October 11, 1945, to Luz and Eva Pacheco in Ysleta, Texas (El Paso). She was the baby of three children with two older brothers, Lou and Tony. She was named after her dear maternal grandmother, Juanita, yet known as Jennie. She shared plenty of funny family stories including her mischievous playfulness with her older brothers.

Our momma taught us what it is to be a true friend; giving more than receiving. We recall her friendships throughout the years, observing how she would be available for friends at any time of day or night, listening, comforting them, and offering support. Duneen refers to momma as her “best friend”. Annette recalls momma saying, “I always wanted sisters, so I made two, you and your sister.” And that she was our parent and best friend. She enjoyed hosting friends and family at our family home and cooking was a big part of showing her love.

She was a beautiful example of being a devoted wife to her beloved husband, our dad, Alonzo Sotelo. She loved, honored, and cared for him in health and sickness for 34 years. Together they created a family home in Sierra Madre full of laughter, music, dancing and most of all love. Love was the enduring quality in our family that allowed us to cherish the good times and successfully cope with the more challenging times. We saw both our parents love one another, love others, and serve Jehovah together. We feel blessed to have had the best parents in the world and we will treasure our memories forever.

Our momma loved learning new things. Her inquisitive mind as a young teenager would change the trajectory of her life. One day, she learned from a school friend that God had a personal name and it was recorded in the Bible. Eventually she accepted a bible study where she learned more about who God is, his Son, and the hope of a beautiful future for all mankind. This led to a life changing decision on February 6, 1966, when she symbolized her dedication through baptism to serve Jehovah God and share Bible truths with not only others but her extended family. Many friends have fond memories of our momma from the English El Sereno Congregation. She viewed her life as having real meaning and fulfillment helping others come to know our loving heavenly father, Jehovah.

As a result of sharing her faith in the bible, she was happy and touched to help many progress to their dedication, which included her parents and relatives. Her most treasured bible students were her children. She would fondly refer to Duneen as her “first bible student” and Annette recalls momma making bible study fun with visual games.

Momma experienced many joys and endured many heavy trials of loss in her life. Yet, like rare diamonds, she held dear God's promises of living forever in true peace on a paradise earth, in perfect health, and being reunited with loved ones who had passed away.

Our momma was a runner. She ran to Jehovah throughout her life to thank him for personal blessings, for the brotherhood, for her family, for the ministry, for having a hope, to set spiritual goals, to request Holy Spirit, to cope with problems, make decisions, endure trials, and to be His friend sharing the secrets of her heart. Because our Momma valued and protected her faith to the very end of her life in immense pain and suffering, she ran her spiritual race and won. Her heavenly father, Jehovah, saw her loyalty and devotion. He is momma’s God and Friend.

As her daughters, we are inspired and positively influenced by our momma’s life. No matter what type of trial she was enduring, her priority was her love for Jehovah God and caring for her children. She left us a priceless spiritual inheritance. Needless to say, she is our superhero.

Our momma is survived by her three children, Duneen Duffin and husband Michael, Annette Smith and husband Cedric, and Ernie Martinez, along with her precious grandchildren, Joshua and Alyssa Duffin, Sy and Ari Martinez, her two brothers Lou and Tony Pacheco and their families, dear cousins and their families, and extended family.

We wish to express heartfelt gratitude to all the devoted family and friends who have provided comfort, prayers, and expressions of sympathy. We hold a special place in our heart for our momma’s home congregation, her spiritual family, the Central Spanish Pasadena congregation who, for over 30 years and throughout her life, shared in her joys and sorrows and made her feel loved. To all our friends and family, your love and support are a true blessing to us in this time of painful loss and we appreciate each and every kindness.

Even though we feel a deep emptiness from losing our beautiful momma, we hold tight to our strong faith in the personal guarantee that Jehovah God has given us, that he will awaken our momma from her peaceful sleep when she hears Jesus’ voice “all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out.” (John 5:28, 29). At that time, we look forward to feeling her warm embrace with tears of joy, hear her contagious laughter, and feel her love forever. In the meantime, we are very thankful for the full life and loving memories we have as her children until we see her again in the beautiful New World soon to come that Jehovah God has prepared. ---- Job 14:13-15; Revelation 21:3, 4.

Recordando a mamá

Nuestra querida mamá iluminó nuestras vidas así como también iluminaba la sala a la que entraba con su hermosa sonrisa, con su risa contagiosa, con su amabilidad y alegría. Tuvimos el privilegio de haber sido colmados de amor por esta mujer que desde a una temprana edad supo que quería ser madre. Como sus hijos, nos sentimos honrados de haber recibido su amor y devoción. Ella nos trajo felicidad e hizo la vida divertida.

Mamá tenía un fuerte vínculo con su familia. Nació el 11 de octubre de 1945, a Luz y Eva Pacheco en Ysleta, Texas (El Paso). Ella era la menor de tres, sus dos hermanos mayores; Lou y Tony. Recibió el nombre de su querida abuela materna, Juanita, pero siempre fue conocida como “Jennie”. Mamá compartió muchas historias de familia divertidas, incluidas las divertidas travesuras con sus hermanos mayores.

Nuestra mamá nos enseñó lo que es ser un verdadero amigo; dando más de lo que se recibe. Recordando sus amistades a través de los años: fuimos testigos de su pronta disposición para escucharlos, consolarlos, ayudarlos y apoyarlos sin importar la hora o el día. Duneen llama a nuestra mamá su "mejor amiga". Annette recuerda que mamá le dijo: “Siempre quise tener hermanas, así que hice dos, tú y tu hermana”. Ella era nuestra madre y mejor amiga. Disfrutaba recibir a amigos y familiares en nuestra casa. Para ella cocinar para los demás era una parte importante de mostrar su amor.

Ella fue un hermoso ejemplo al ser una esposa leal y dedicada a su amado esposo, nuestro papá, Alonzo Sotelo. Ella lo amó, honró y cuidó de él en salud y enfermedad durante 34 años. Juntos crearon un hogar en Sierra Madre lleno de risas, música, baile y sobre todo amor. El amor fue la cualidad perdurable en nuestra familia, esto nos permitió apreciar los buenos momentos y hacer frente con éxito a los momentos más difíciles. Vimos a nuestros padres amarse, amar a los demás y servir a Jehová juntos. Nos sentimos bendecidos de haber tenido los mejores padres del mundo y atesoraremos nuestros recuerdos para siempre.

A nuestra mamá le encantaba aprender cosas nuevas. Su mente inquisitiva durante su adolescencia cambiaría la trayectoria de su vida. Un día, ella aprendió de una amiga de la escuela que Dios tenía un nombre personal y que estaba escrito en la Biblia. Eventualmente aceptó un estudio bíblico donde aprendió más acerca de quién es Dios, su hijo Jesus y la esperanza de un hermoso futuro para toda la humanidad. Todo esto la llevó a una decisión que cambió su vida; el día 6 de febrero de 1966, simbolizó su dedicación mediante el bautismo para servir a Jehová Dios y compartir las verdades bíblicas no sólo con otras personas sino también con sus familiares. Muchos amigos de la congregación de inglés El Sereno tienen gratos recuerdos de nuestra mamá. Ella consideraba que su vida tenía verdadero sentido y satisfacción al ayudar a otras personas a conocer a nuestro amoroso padre celestial, Jehová.

Como resultado por compartir su fe en la Biblia ella fue feliz y motivada a ayudar a muchos a progresar hasta su dedicación, estos incluyo a sus padres y familiares. Sus estudiantes bíblicos más preciados eran sus hijos. Con cariño se referiría a Duneen como su “primera estudiante de la Biblia”. Annette recuerda que mamá hacía que el estudio de la Biblia fuera divertido usando juegos visuales.

Mamá vivió muchas alegrías y aguanto muchas pruebas difíciles y pérdidas en su vida. Sin embargo, como diamantes poco comunes, ella se adhiero a las promesas de Dios de vivir para siempre en verdadera paz en una tierra paradisíaca, en perfecta salud y al reencuentro con sus seres queridos que habían fallecido.

Nuestra mamá era una corredora. Ella corrió a Jehová a lo largo de su vida para agradecerle; por bendiciones personales, por la hermandad, por su familia, por el ministerio, por darle una esperanza, por permitirle tener metas espirituales, por poder pedir Espíritu Santo, por la fuerza que le daba para afrontar los problemas, por la guia que le daba para tomar buenas decisiones, por darle el aguante para cada una de las pruebas a las que se enfrentó, por ser su amiga y permitirle que le compartiera los secretos de su corazón. Debido a que nuestra mamá valoró y protegió su fe hasta el final de su vida aun con un inmenso dolor y sufrimiento, ella corrió su carrera espiritual y ganó. Y su padre celestial, Jehová, vio su lealtad y devoción. Él es el Dios y Amigo de mamá.

Como sus hijas, estamos inspiradas e influenciadas positivamente por la vida de nuestra mamá. Sin importar qué tipo de prueba estuviera pasando, su prioridad era su amor por Jehová Dios y el cuidado de sus hijos. Ella nos dejó una invaluable herencia espiritual. No hace falta decir que, ella es nuestra superheroína.

A nuestra mamá le sobreviven sus tres hijos, Duneen Duffin y su esposo Michael, Annette Smith y su esposo Cedric, y Ernie Martinez, junto con sus preciosos nietos, Joshua y Alyssa Duffin, Sy y Ari Martinez, sus dos hermanos Lou y Tony Pacheco y su familias, queridos primos y sus familias, y demás familia.

Deseamos expresar nuestro más sincero agradecimiento a todos los queridos familiares y amigos que nos han brindado consuelo, oraciones y expresiones de condolencias. Tenemos un lugar muy especial en nuestro corazón para la congregación Central Spanish Pasadena pues era la familia espiritual de nuestra amada mamá, y la cual por más de 30 años y a lo largo de su vida, compartió sus alegrías y tristezas y la hizo sentir amada. A todos nuestros amigos y familiares, su amor y apoyo son una verdadera bendición para nosotros en este momento tan difícil por tan dolorosa pérdida y apreciamos todas y cada una de sus demostraciones de cariño.

Aunque sentimos un profundo vacío por la pérdida de nuestra hermosa mamá, nos aferramos a nuestra fe fuerte, en la garantía personal que Jehová Dios nos ha dado, que nuestra mama despertará de su sueño profundo cuando escuche la voz de Jesús “todos los que están en las tumbas oirán su voz y saldrán”. (Juan 5:28, 29). En ese momento, esperamos sentir su cálido abrazo con lágrimas de alegría, escuchar su risa contagiosa y sentir su amor para siempre. Mientras tanto, estamos muy agradecidos por la vida plena que tuvo y los recuerdos amorosos que tenemos como sus hijos: Hasta que la volvamos a ver en el hermoso Nuevo Mundo que pronto vendrá y que Jehová Dios ha preparado. ---- Job 14:13-15; Apocalipsis 21:3, 4.
