Corbin's obituary

We are devastated to announce the passing of Jean-Lucien Corbin Speer Barrientos, aka "T’Choupi," who departed this life at the age of 14 on August 3, 2023, after a three-year struggle with a rare and cruel disease.

Corbin was born on October 19, 2008, in Oakland. He will be remembered for his exceptional talent for building, making, and taking apart almost anything, wry sense of humor, mischievous smile, beautiful red curly hair and gorgeous freckles, passion for Legos and Japanese manga, and insatiable sweet tooth.

Corbin’s happy place was Camp Newman, a reform Jewish summer camp in Santa Rosa, where he spent two glorious summers. After his first summer at Camp Newman, he returned home with an encyclopedic knowledge of Hebrew prayers and songs, and promptly informed his parents that he was Jewish. He had planned to become a Bar Mitzvah as soon as he was well. When he entered the Kaiser Pediatric ICU in June 2023, he was given the Hebrew name Akiva by Rabbi Dev of Kehilla Community Synagogue.

The world has lost a brilliant, sensitive being. He could pull from numerous disparate ideas and cultures, and synthesize all the parts into a new and meaningful whole. Corbin was also known by those who loved him for his quirky nature. He wanted to follow in his brother's musical footsteps and play an instrument, and yet what did he choose?  An obscure instrument that most of us have never even heard of: a bass clarinet!

He had both admiration for and a special bond with his older brother Jesse, who always took him under his wing.

Corbin is survived by his parents Jennifer and Josh, brother Jesse, The Grandmothers KAM and Gabriella, Großvater Edgar, Grammy Cindy, Grandpoppy Zeno, Tío Kenneth, Tía Lena, great uncle Dennis, great aunt Lonna, and cousins Susanna, Gregory, Andrew, Nathan, and Leila.

We invite everyone who loved Corbin to join us as we remember and celebrate his life. As we mourn his passing, let us also remember the laughter, silliness, and joy he brought into our lives.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider making a donation to one of these organizations that were special to Corbin: Camp Newman, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Marine Mammal Center, Guide Dogs for the Blind, or the Crucible.
