Background
For Jay Dehner and his family, the outdoors was more than a passion—it was a guiding force in life. Growing up on Lake Wawasee, some of Jay’s best memories were on the water—waterskiing at dawn, swimming under the summer sun, and water skiing with effortless skill. The lake was more than a place of recreation; it was where his family connected, where he found adventure, and where he developed a deep respect for nature.
That same love for the wild stayed with him when he discovered Dishman Hills, where he and his family hiked, explored, and felt the same sense of belonging he had known on the lake. He understood that places like these needed protection—not just for himself, but for future generations.
The Dishman Hills Conservancy and the Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation reflect Jay’s belief that nature should be preserved, not just enjoyed. These organizations ensure that the landscapes he cherished remain wild and accessible, safeguarding the lakes, forests, and trails that connect people to the outdoors. Thanks to efforts like these, Jay’s legacy lives on in every ripple on the water and every step on the trail, inspiring others to love and protect the wild places that shaped him.
