Otto and Avis have been like grandparents to me over the years and they have always gone out of their way to support me. I remember when preparing for a study abroad trip, Otto and Avis reached out immediately to get me in touch with their good friends in France to make sure I had someone to go to if I needed any help. Otto was always eager to discuss career goals, travels, and life plans and made those he spoke to feel important and heard. I feel so grateful to have shared many a Thanksgiving and Berg kid celebration with him. Though not much of a sports fan myself, Thanksgiving football will always bring a smile to my face thanks to Otto.

Thank you for sharing the touching description of Otto’s love of family, his impact on those he crossed paths with in life, and his multiple achievements. Every encounter with Otto began with his warm greeting, followed by his detailed and genuine inquiry into your children’s educational progress and your family’s well-being. Otto could always be counted on to liven up the Thanksgiving holiday with his affable nature and hearty laughter, colorful football commentary, and appreciative compliments to those contributing dishes — particularly the gooseberry pie. Otto’s spirit will live on in our family gatherings and through the wonderful memories we share. Sending our love to all of Otto’s family, particularly his loving wife, Avis; his children and their partners; and his grandchildren — of whom he was particularly proud.

A beautiful spirit, generous and always bringing the fun and giving loving support to our sons when they were at NAU. It was a treat to have known Otto and Avis.

My condolences to Otto's family. He played a notable and important part of my early professional career when he hired me in 1984 as a career counselor at Northern Arizona University. While he set high expectations, his gregarious nature instilled a sense of personality into our collective work. After all these years, I still recall many memories of Otto.

Otto always made me feel like a welcomed and valued colleague in the department of Educational Leadership at Northern Arizona University. I could always count on him for a warm smile and kind words. He exemplified collegiality in the finest sense. I will miss him very much.

Condolences and prayers to Otto's family. I had the pleasure of knowing him during my student days, in the 70's, at NAU. Otto was a gentlemen, a kind man and a raconteur extraordinaire. Bob Dickeson's observations of Otto in the published obituary was right on point. Otto made all of us feel like he knew us well and that were very important. I am sure he is receiving a just and pleasant reward now as he certainly earned it. I count knowing Otto as one of my received blessings. RIP, Ernest Calderón

Otto was truly one of a kind. Always a huge warm smile. I grew up in the adjacent neighborhood friends the Berg kids, and I could see Otto one day, and the very next day he would greet me like I was the most important person on the planet. Some things I won't ever forget - the holiday popcorn he would deliver, which (his secret sauce as I remember) was that it was "buttered" with bacon bits and a tad bit of bacon grease. Maybe more than a tad....It was one of my favorite things ever- and so unique, just like the man making it. Rafting down the Grand Canyon with Otto and his sons is another of the many memories I'll never forget. He brought endless stories that we always eagerly listened to, and as always, had a way of making everything more interesting and enjoyable. So many memories. I am grateful beyond words for having known him. David Besnette

Condolences to the Berg family. I always smiled when I saw Otto approaching because I knew I would probably be laughing in a short time. The dollars he squeezed out of folks with his personality and auctioneer skills supported our community for years. Gods Speed Otto!
