Greg's obituary

Gregory Scott Miller (Greg) lived a wonderful and meaningful life defined by love, service, and enjoying the outdoors. He died unexpectedly at the age of 66 on March 23, 2026 in Alameda, California while visiting his parents. He spent his last days doing some of his favorite things: skiing, soaking in the hot tub, and road tripping.

If you knew Greg, you knew he always listened with his whole being, was ready to attend any concert or sporting event, hike any trail, ski any mountain, or travel many miles to see his loved ones. He always made an effort to connect with everyone - with family, friends, and strangers. Greg was a person who showed up for you. He might have been getting off his bike after cruising the Fort Collins paths or out of the car after driving many miles overnight, but he was always there when you needed him, for whatever you needed him for.

Born October 20, 1959 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Greg spent most of his childhood in Madison, Wisconsin. He attended Carthage College, followed by law school at the University of Colorado. While living in Colorado, he met another Midwestern transplant, his wife, Lori Macdonald, who in his own words, was ‘my kindred spirit, my soul mate, the love of my life.’ Teaming up for a victorious game of Trivial Pursuit on the night they met set the stage for the next  41 years of a mutual and equal partnership in all things. Their marriage was filled with adventures around the country and the world, daily games of Backgammon, and lots of love.

Greg viewed his work as a lawyer, whether in the District Attorney’s office, as a magistrate, or as a child advocate attorney, through the lens of service to his community. He spent his free time supporting various other causes, serving on community boards supporting at-risk youth, city parks, and more. How Greg chose to spend his time was a direct reflection of his values.

Greg’s most important and precious role was being the father to his two children, Jared and Abby (and husband, Tony), and most recently, his new role as grandpa to Isabel. Jared will miss being on the slopes with his number one ski partner and Abby will miss her number one model of faith in action. His children will try to carry on what he taught them: to accept others without judgement, to be your genuine self, and to find something to be passionate about and to do it.

His philosophy on hiking was the same as his philosophy on life – if you just hike up a little farther, maybe around that bend, we’ll see what we can see. In hiking and in life, he was the encourager, the curious one, and the eternal optimist. In honoring Greg, we will carry that spirit forward in all we do. Greg will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Greg leaves behind his beloved wife, Lori, his son, Jared, and his daughter, Abby (Tony) Dunham and his granddaughter, Isabel. He also is survived by his parents, Jerry and Margaret Miller, his four siblings: Joy (Dave) Temple, Carol (Tim) Pressly, Beth Miller, and Dave (Allie) Miller, and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and loved ones.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 30th at Spring Canyon Park in Fort Collins, Colorado. See Event tab for more details. In lieu of flowers, we welcome memorial donations to two organizations that Greg served on the community board for: the Fort Collins Parks ‘Forever Fund’ or Turning Point Center for Youth and Family Development in Larimer County to provide resources for at-risk youth.
