Gordy's obituary

Gordy Myers, age 75, of Minneapolis, MN, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025, surrounded by family, after a valiant battle with lung disease.

Gordy’s legacy includes his four children with Sandy Myers: Jen (John) Pena, Becky (Mike) Thronson, Katie (Ben) Bussey, and Davis (Linnea) Myers. He was a proud grandfather to Mitchell, Jack, Dean, Bella, Kristen, Ophelia, and Michael, who brought him immense joy. He was also a beloved brother to Jack (Fran), Kathy (Carl), Bill (Patricia), and Jim, and son of Margaret and John Myers.

Throughout his life, Gordy demonstrated remarkable versatility and resourcefulness. He embraced a variety of roles, including handyman, caregiver, salesman, and real estate agent, consistently displaying a “jack-of-all-trades” aptitude. Gordy possessed a keen intellect and a fearless spirit, readily tackling any project with determination and confidence, regardless of his prior experience.

His passions included playing cribbage, cheering on the Minnesota Twins, fishing, photography, creative writing, and reading. He also had a particular fondness for root beer floats. Gordy was known for his affable nature and his ability to connect with people instantly. His warm personality, humor, and quick wit left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

In keeping with his compassionate nature and desire to help others, even in his passing, Gordy chose to participate in the University of Minnesota Medical School’s Anatomy Bequest Program and Lions Gift of Sight.

A Celebration of Life and Service of Gratitude will be held in Minneapolis, MN, on Saturday, June 7, 2025 - details to follow.

The family would like to thank the staff at Villas at the Park, a skilled nursing facility, for making the last 10 months of Gordy’s life full of dignity and joy, the staff at Methodist Hospital for ensuring he was comfortable and the family was taken care of, and finally, a special thanks to Kim, his palliative care nurse, you made Gordy feel truly seen, safe, and supported throughout the last year and a half of his life. Thank you.

In lieu of flowers, donations that support COPD research, tobacco cessation programs, or anti-big-tobacco lobbyists would honor Gordy’s memory.

Note from the author:

If you currently smoke or vape, please quit. Lung disease is a serious matter. This death was preventable; it was an awful, slow, and painful experience for both Gordy and his family. While these words are my own, Gordy often shared how he found it hard to understand why anyone would continue to inhale harmful products into their lungs in this day and age. Addiction is real, and quitting is hard, but there are resources for help. Let's look after ourselves and each other.
