Francisco's obituary

Introduction

Dr. Francisco Faustino Coronel, a cherished professor, insightful scholar, and devoted family man, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on the evening of Wednesday, June 21, 2023.

His passing leaves an immeasurable void not just in the hearts of his family but also among the thousands of students he taught and influenced during his illustrious tenure as a professor at Hampton University.

Early Life and Education

Born in Peru, Dr. Coronel overcame numerous obstacles to pursue his passion for academia with relentless dedication. Francisco was the oldest of ten children and adopted the role of patriarch for his family out of continued necessity and sheer selflessness.

Dr. Coronel was selected to receive a full-ride scholarship to attend MIT after spending two years at the best engineering school in Peru.

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and two master's degrees from Columbia University, one in Mathematical Statistics and another in Business Administration.  Later, he attained his Ph.D. in Marketing from Purdue University.

Academic Career

His intellectual rigor and academic prowess led him to a distinguished career at Hampton University. Dr. Coronel taught in the Business Administration Department for 33 years. He served as a mentor, guide, and friend, instilling in his students his love for learning and fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities of the business world.

Dr. Coronel's diverse curriculum highlighted his vast knowledge and experience in various fields. He shared his teachings worldwide at universities in Canada, Peru, and France. 

He taught courses ranging from Marketing Management, International and Global Marketing to Sales Management and Business Statistics. His unique courses like "Marketing in the Travel Industry: Mexico" and "Marketing in France" showcased his passion for exploring and understanding different cultures and economies. 

As a respected scholar, Dr. Coronel made significant contributions to his field. He co-authored "Opportunities for Economies of Scope: Focus on African American and Hispanic Markets" and published a textbook titled "Marketing Management." 

He spoke fluent English, Spanish, and French and was conversational in Portuguese, Italian, German, Japanese, and Mandarin.

Professional Associations and Community Involvement

Dr. Coronel was an active member of The Chicago Mercantile Exchange, The Chicago Board of Trade, and the American Marketing Association. On Fridays, he would foster faculty camaraderie by attending the weekly reunions at the faculty center and enjoying some fish and chips while playing cards. His dedication and commitment to his university and these organizations exemplified his tireless pursuit of knowledge and his commitment to his profession.

Outside academia, he volunteered for Former President Obama's campaign in 2008, helping him secure a win in Virginia.

Personal Life and Interests

Francisco was a man of diverse interests. From a young age, he taught his children to swim and would purchase family meals from the local Chinese restaurant Wan Shung. 

He had a passion for dancing and listening to music and was an avid reader with a love for authors like John Grisham, Jules Verne, and Mario Vargas Llosa. He enjoyed painting, watching soccer, and attending operas. 

He loved long walks, though he was not keen on taking a dog along. His favorite color was yellow, and he had a penchant for wearing yellow ties on special occasions. His favorite cities were New York, Los Angeles, and Faical in Peru.

Farewell

Dr. Francisco Coronel's life is an enduring testament to the transformative power of education and the impact one individual can have on countless lives. 

He is survived by his wife, Rosa, and his children, Frances, Rosi, and Francisco.

His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the generations of students who will walk the halls of Hampton University. 

Dr. Francisco Faustino Coronel, you will be profoundly missed.
