Evelyn's obituary
Evelyn Pearl Benson, 93, of Hillsboro, Texas, passed away on August 27, 2021
Evelyn was born in Centerville, Texas on February 14, 1928. She lived in East Texas during the formative years and attended Clintonview Baptist Church. Evelyn graduated from Phillis Wheatly High School in Houston, Texas before attending Walls Hammond Business School. She was the proud mother of Dr. Jackolyn Benson Morgan, dean of health sciences at Cisco College at the time of her death in 2011
She relocated from Houston to Hill County in the mid 1940’s, when she joined Brown Chapel Methodist Church under the late Rev. H. E. Kuykendall. Evelyn worked at the Hillsboro Clinic for several years before accepting her position at Hill Regional Hospital (former Grant-Buie Hospital), where she provided essential housekeeping services before retiring.
If you know her, you know the risk of calling during one of her TV shows or Dallas Mavericks games… and it would not likely end well. While her passion was cooking, she was a dedicated and loving mother and grandmother. Friends and family will always remember her as the Benson Family matriarch, granddaughter of Elvira Robinson, and the baked goods at family gatherings.
Evelyn was a devoted member of Wade Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Hillsboro, Texas, and honored to be recognized as a community leader and advisor.
She is survived by brothers; O. D. Benson, Roosevelt Benson, and Javan Benson, one grandson; Earnest Morgan, Jr. (Chad DiDonato), one guardian niece; Bridgett Bailey Thornton (Charles Thornton), one special cousin; Jerldean Walker (Robert Walker); and a host of family and friends who love her dearly.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her daughter; Dr. Jackolyn Morgan, E. S. Benson (Father), Anna Benson (Mother), Gwendolyn Benson-White (Sister), Andrew Benson (Brother), Buck Benson (Brother), O. B. Benson (Brother), Viola Benson (sister-in-law), La Cedric Thompson (great nephew)
On behalf of the Benson Family, especially her grandson, we are forever grateful to this entire community for enabling Evelyn to age-in-place and continue to thrive – but we should all be so fortunate to have a friend like Octavia Bush, or Myra & John Revely.
A memorial service is scheduled for 11 am on September 11, 2021 at Wade Chapel AME Church, on the corner of Church & McDonald, in Hillsboro, Texas 76645. In the interest of public health, all are welcome to celebrate Evelyns life by attending in-person (per CDC Guidelines) or video live stream.
