Erik's obituary
Erik Verboon, 46, of Jersey City, New Jersey, passed away on September 21, 2025. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, on March 26, 1979, he was the beloved husband of Michelle Verboon (née Bauer) and the devoted father of Arjen and Bram.
Family was at the heart of Erik’s life. He delighted in spending time with his boys, playing soccer, drumming, exploring music, and taking them on adventures near and far. Travel brought him immense joy, and he created countless cherished memories with his family throughout the United States and Europe. Erik’s warmth, humor, and joyful energy made every moment with him unforgettable.
Erik grew up in Rockaway, New Jersey, and Erie, Pennsylvania, before his family moved to Beavercreek, Ohio, where he completed his high school years, graduating from Beavercreek High School in 1997. Wherever he lived, Erik built and maintained close friendships that lasted a lifetime, and he treasured the bonds he formed in each of these communities.
For the past 22 years, Erik and his family built a life together in Cincinnati, Hoboken, and later Jersey City, New Jersey. In each place, they created a home filled with love, laughter, and warmth. Over the years, Erik nurtured a close circle of friends who were like family, sharing holidays, celebrations, and countless everyday moments that brought joy, support, and meaning to their lives.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Cincinnati in 2003 and a Master of Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 2007. He began his career with Michael McInturf Architect and also shared his knowledge as a teacher at Stevens Institute of Technology, Columbia University, and Pratt Institute. He went on to serve as an associate at Buro Happold for eight years before joining Walter P. Moore in New York, where he became Senior Principal and National Director of Enclosure Engineering, building a respected career in architecture and engineering. Erik was admired by colleagues and students alike for his creativity, dedication, and generosity in mentoring others.
Erik is survived by his parents, Johannes (Hans) and Francien Verboon; his sister, Natalie Verboon Dwyer; his brother, Nigel Verboon; and extended family in Ohio, Nebraska, the Netherlands, and France.
He will be remembered for his steadfast devotion to his family, the lifelong friendships he cherished, his passion for design and teaching, and the joy and energy he brought to everything he loved.
