Elmo's obituary
Elmo Jose Andam was born on March 27, 1939 in Dingras, Ilocos Norte, Philippines – a municipality south east of Laoag City – to Encarnacion Llanes Jose Andam and Pablo Coloma Andam. He was the middle of three brothers, the eldest – Prospero, and the youngest – Precious. Elmo was educated at Gabaldon Elementary School and then Dingras High School. He started college at Mapua Institute of Technology, transferred to National University and then earned a degree in civil engineering from Northwestern University in Laoag City.
Elmo married the love of his life, Luz Amorin, in 1970 in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, Philippines. They were blessed with two sons, Eric and Errol. Elmo immigrated to the United States in 1974 and worked in the insurance industry at National Life, which later became American General. He had a very rewarding career and received many regional accolades. The peak highlight of his career was when he earned the President Council Award, the highest honor given by the company. He and his wife were flown first class to Athens, Greece for the awards ceremony. After retiring from insurance, he worked at Kaiser Permanente at the Pasadena Medical Office in the Outpatient Medical Records department and then fully retired in 2001.
He was one of the five founders of the Sons And Daughters of Dingras, Ilocos Norte Organization (SADDINO) – an organization for all who were born, raised and lived in that municipality of the Philippines. He was the President of the organization for two terms during which he helped raise funds for local projects and sponsor scholarship programs. He was the last of the five SADDINO founders to pass away. He served as the coordinator of the Southern California region for the restoration of the St. Joseph Parish Church Ruins in Dingras. The church has gone through a huge restoration, which is still ongoing but is now being used for Eucharistic celebrations.
He considered himself bountifully blessed for having travelled the world with his wife. They took religious pilgrimages to the Holy Land, Vatican City, Lourdes and Fatima. They have also experienced some of the ancient Wonders of the World up close and personal, like the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt, the Great Wall of China and the Taj Mahal in India. Cruising was his favorite way to travel.
He was excited when his son Errol married Jennifer in 2018. He was even more elated when Isla Ann, his first granddaughter was born in 2019 and then his second granddaughter, Liza Lu, was born in 2021. A highlight of his life was when they all came to visit in March of this year. This was the very first time for him to hug, kiss, cuddle and play with Isla and Liza, who he referred to as his two precious princesses.
Elmo Jose Andam passed away peacefully on April 7, 2023 in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family.
