Ned's obituary

It is with great sadness that is gradually transitioning to a sense of peace, that we share the loss of our son, father, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin and friend, Edward Dominick “Ned” Garn. Ned was born April 30, 1963 in Toledo, Ohio and died suddenly September 14, 2023. He was the son of the late John M. Garn, and is survived by his mother, Mary Kay Garn, formerly of Toledo, now of Valdosta, Georgia; his child, Nick Garn, of Phoenix, Arizona; his sister Katie Newbern and her husband Thomas Newbern, Sr. Of Valdosta; sister Julie Wolff and her husband David Wolff of Oakton, Virginia; and brother Michael Garn and his wife Ellen Posman of Berea, Ohio; in addition to several nieces, a nephew, and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He attended both parochial and public schools in Toledo, graduating in 1981 from St. Francis de Sales High School. Ned also attended Owens Technical College, and the University of Toledo.

Ned had a love for music of the 70’s and 80’s. He enjoyed concerts and would often reminisce about ones he enjoyed attending at the old Toledo Sports Arena. Growing up, Ned and Michael shared a bedroom next to Katie and Julie, and his sisters did not appreciate Ned’s stereo system that blasted the likes of Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Ted Nugent. He was pleased in an “I told you so” kind of way when some years later his sisters’ taste for classic heavy metal music fortunately developed.

A talented craftsman, he was especially skilled in mechanical, electrical, plumbing and carpentry work. Ned held many jobs related to these fields and at one time owned a custom blind and shutter business in South Carolina, where he lived for many years. He had an eye for detail, and took pride in doing precise work.

Ned’s sense of humor was witty and dry. He often used his humor in entertaining stories about his everyday experiences. Ned held strong to his faith in God and was committed to witnessing to others. He also found great comfort in the outdoors. Ned had a pure heart, a gentle spirit, and compassion for those in need.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In honor of Ned, memorial donations can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
