Debby's obituary

Debra Ann Looby, known as Debby, passed away on May 21, 2023, in Burbank, CA, surrounded by her children. She was born on August 12, 1950, in Perth Amboy, NJ, to Walter and Jeanette Sokolowski. In her early years, Debby displayed a bright mind and attended St. Louis Academy in Staten Island, NY, where she earned a first honor pin every marking period throughout her four years of high school. She pursued higher education at Seton Hall in New Jersey.

Starting from a young age, Debby’s artistic talents flourished. Encouraged by her father, she discovered her love for oil painting, starting with replicating comic strips. Her gift for painting continued to grow and was something she continued to enjoy throughout her life.

After college, Debby embarked on a journey that led her through various teaching and office positions across Florida and Georgia. Eventually, she settled in Los Angeles, CA, where she fulfilled her lifelong dream of becoming a mother in 1981. Her three children brought her immeasurable joy and pride. As her children grew, Debby became not only a devoted mother but also their closest confidante and best friend. Debby’s dedication extended to her grandchildren, who held a very special place in her heart. She never missed an opportunity to shower them with love or to send them loving cards for every holiday.

Fiery and unafraid to speak her mind, Debby was a force to be reckoned with. Her strength and unwavering commitment to her children were the hallmarks of her character.

When not spending time with her children, Debby found solace in watching movies, going out to eat with friends, and indulging in her favorite cooking and court TV shows. She was also a very skilled home-cook, after learning to cook dinner for her parents from a young age. Some of her specialties included London broil, fried shrimp, tacos, and mashed potatoes (with absolutely no lumps).

An animal lover, Debby had adopted and rescued dogs from shelters throughout her life. She cherished the companionship of her beloved dog, Joey, spending time at the dog park and sharing countless cuddles on the couch.

After retiring from a successful 20+ year career in property management in 2022, she rekindled her passion for painting and embarked on new family adventures, including a recent trip to Italy – a lifelong dream come true.

A celebration of Debby’s remarkable life will be held in honor on her birthday weekend. Details will be shared at a later date.

Debby is survived by her children, Alison De Young, Jeffrey Looby, and Chelsea Looby, and her cherished grandchildren, Collette De Young and Walter De Young.

Debby’s mighty spirit, profound love, and delicious home cooked meals will forever live in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.

“To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colors of a rainbow.” – Maya Angelou
