In lieu of flowers

Please consider a contribution to A Scoreboard and Scholarship in Hampstead.

Background

After Dad passed away, some of you reached out to ask if there was a way to make donations in his honor. At the time, we hesitated, because some of the "causes" that may have fit, while deserving, felt impersonal and not like the right way to honor him.

My father's magic was in the way he moved through his days, connecting with people one-on-one, helping others any time he saw an opportunity, and making each new person he met feel as if they had a new best friend. And for the 30 years we lived in Hampstead, he volunteered for the Hampstead Civic Club, coached *endless* seasons of Biddy Basketball and Girls' Softball, and played in the Men's Basketball and Softball Leagues. He never missed a town event, and you couldn't buy a grilled sausage at the 4th of July without him asking you everything about your life and sending you on your way laughing from a joke.

It felt as if we needed to honor him in a way that would more immediately impact and add to the community that he loved so much for so many years. And so, we are donating a new scoreboard to the Depot Road field in Hampstead, to keep his legacy of supporting youth sports in Hampstead alive. Additionally, an ongoing scholarship in Dad's name will be given out by the Hampstead Civic Club at the July 4th celebration. We are so thankful to Hampstead's Recreation Department and to the Civic Club for helping us with this effort. One of the lovely parts of what has been a tough spring was hearing from his Hampstead friends and all the "kids" that he coached over the years. The stories have been a blast.

If you would like to take part in this fund in some way, you can offer a donation by visiting this site. Mom and I are so grateful and so moved at how many of you have reached out with love and support and most of all, with such great stories from his life. I like to think he's proof that small gestures leave a big mark.
