We are so saddened to hear about Casey. He was Sam's buddy and at our house often. He was friendly, funny, smart and full of light -- always a smile on his face. We really enjoyed having him around. He was something special. We'll miss him and will never forget him. Take good care.

The Staver family (Portland)
Casey and I got really into photography our sophomore year of high school. We would scheme about photo ops, and both learned how to develop film together and use the dark room. One thing I loved about Casey was that not only was he exceptionally smart, and always succeeded in English, Science and especially Math, but he was artistic. He had a seamless way of being a well-rounded academic, social, and creative person. He never fit the stereotype of just being able to fit into one place. I would always see Casey mingling with different types of people throughout the school day. He seemed to get genuine satisfaction out of problem solving, developing ideas, and expressing himself creatively. I always admired his way to get the most out of school, and not limit himself to just a couple of subjects. He loved experimenting. To see him work on, and grow as a photographer alongside myself was super inspiring to me. He found meaning, and engaged with everything INTENTIONALLY. He was passionate about finding music, he was passionate about cooking, he was passionate about art, he was passionate about school and engaging with the material and his classmates. I remember back in 8th grade when Casey and I became best friends, there was a 'mock-trial' unit in our 8th grade block class. We sort of prided ourselves of being edgy skateboarders that broke the rules, but he and I were able to genuinely try and have formal debates in this mock-trial section of our class. We read up on the topics, and we practiced debating with each other all the time. When he and I went into the trials, we always were able to make insightful remarks, and debate exceptionally for our side of the case. Plenty of other people I was around might have not wanted to entertain that idea of actually trying to be good at school, but Casey was different. Casey pushed me to not take education for granted, and not to write it off as unimportant. Throughout our school journey, Casey was always in the higher-level math classes, and his way of being academic and cultured at the same time ALWAYS inspired me. I was a struggling math student throughout my school experience, and it wasn't until later that I found my passion for math. Without Casey, I seriously would have never considered that I could be good at math if I really engaged with it. Now I do math everyday as part of my job. Casey had the ability to effortlessly be his cool, artistic self, and still have time to be a nerd. Without that model in my life, I would absolutely not be where I am now.

The first and only time I met Casey was in Carmel Valley, when I drove down from San Francisco to see Janine and I believe Casey was 3 or 4 at the time. Janine went into the house to get me something to drink and I was on the outside deck looking around and I accidentally stepped on and broke Casey's favorite toy. It was a plastic dinosaur or some animal. I felt so bad. I believe Janine hid the toy and he never found out. Sadly, I was never able to meet Casey as a young man, and I can see from all the photos and stories posted that I missed out on meeting someone very very special.
Janine has been a life long friend that I have know since 1990, and I love her dearly. I am very sad at the moment for her and her family's loss of their beloved son, brother and friend Casey. My deepest condolences, Mark Brecke
