Childhood homes
My dad, Carl, grew up in Archer City, TX but he was born in Electra, TX, because Archer City didn't have a hospital or a doctor.
Growing up, dad lived in many different houses. In the first house, his family just rented a room. The next place was a shack with two rooms and an outhouse. Later, they lived in a house on the outskirts of Archer City, with a pig or two out back. After that, they lived in a house that was catty-corner to the courthouse and next to a theater. Dad loved the theater because he could see movies there for 9 cents. After dad's sister, Pat, was born, they were able to buy a house. The house cost $650. Dad said it looked like a barn at first, with gaps in the walls where he could see straight outside, but after years of home improvements it looked nice. Dad's family stayed there until he was in the 5th grade and Perry was transferred by the Conoco oil company to Bowie, TX.
