I moved from Pittsburgh years ago, but was thinking about Brian and just saw this post.  I'm so sorry for his loss and family.  Brian and I lost track of each other years ago but I remember his kindness and big heart, caving and one white table cloth birthday surprise for his sister in a WV cave. Lots of good wishes to his family and those that loved him!
I remember sitting in the living room one morning with you in the house you had a room in in State College, while Brian was in the kitchen getting ready to make beignets. We were chatting, and suddenly there was this loud shout followed by cursing from the kitchen. "Brian, are you ok?!" "Yeah." "Brian, did you stick your finger into the burning oil to see if it was hot yet?" "....yeah..."

Brian would have been 60 today. Last year around this time we started restoring his 1967 Camaro (a 16th birthday gift which required a bit of restoration in 1979). In October of 2022 he put this video together with some pictures from the 1st restoration and some of the places they went after, along with some from this time around. She's not back on the road yet, but will be. Happy Birthday, Brian. We love you and miss you.

When I think of my conversations with Brian, it always makes me smile.  We would talk often while waiting for Jacob and Ian to finish gymnastics practice back before Covid didn’t allow us to. Besides his stories, what would make me laugh most was the fact that I would be planning on doing some work during that time.  But then I’d see Brian, sit down, open my laptop (to pretend like I would work), and then start talking.  Two hours later, we’d wrap up the conversation and I would have gotten no work done.  But what I would get was a great conversation with a great person who we all will miss dearly.  Condolences to everyone who knew and loved Brian.

Our sons were on the boys competitive gymnastics team and the parents spent many hours waiting on the boys and traveling to the meets. I always enjoyed sitting with Brian and talking. He always had something interesting to say. And we did share a love of caving. We think me, him, Sandy and Ernie crossed paths at least once in WV! My sincerest condolences to all of the family. 💕
Once when I was in a 'squeeze' situation at Friar’s Hole back in the early 1990s, Brian did something that, at the time, seemed a bit odd from my perspective... He started cracking jokes. While at that moment, I wasn’t really amused because I was pinned between two hard surfaces, the reality was that Brian knew that a few jokes would help provide clarity of thought. In that moment, the distraction from the problem at hand – even if just for a few seconds – was what was needed to solve the problem. To this day, I think back to that moment when Brian suggested setting my clothes on fire (jokingly, of course) as a way for me to get “unstuck” was the levity that was needed for us to really problem-solve. Brian’s mental toughness, his humorous banter, and his empathy for every single friend in need is something that has stuck with me for more than three decades. This is how Brian will live on in my mind and my heart.
