Original Clippers big 3. Bens…

Original Clippers big 3. Benson always made a fun weekend out those special visits from friends back home.
There’s no better way to show…

There’s no better way to show how cool someone is than with a vintage-looking Polaroid. I mean it in the best way possible when I say that Benson is a hipster…effortlessly cool, down-to-earth, and had an eye for discovering trends long before they became mainstream. Every time I stumbled upon a brand or design I admired on Instagram, I was never surprised to find it already "followed by benchien." This was a spontaneous catch-up we had in New York when Audrey was visiting, and I snapped this Polaroid of him
I first met Benson in college…
2012, Green Zone at the SGV
I first met Benson in college through Polly. One of my earliest memories was sharing a delicious Hainan chicken meal together at Green Zone, where we bonded instantly over food and laughter. Back then, in 2012, mind you one of my first encounters with Benson, I guess I already jokingly labeled Benson as "a cray cray friend" in an Instagram caption. But beyond being silly and laughing at lunch, what I truly remember is how instantly comfortable and joyful I felt in his presence. — with Polly Tanaka

Benson lived across the hall during our freshmen year at USC. He was one of the first friends I made at school. He was also Chinese, from the Bay, and such a nerd lol. He immediately made school feel like home for me. Our freshmen year, every day when he got back to the dorm, he would yell in the hallway “EY YO A!” and I would respond “EY YO B!” His way of greeting to let me know he was home.

We spent hours in Benson’s room on the fourth floor loudly meowing at people downstairs from his window, cracking up whenever someone would hear us and ducking down if they started looking up so they wouldn’t see us.

We had long talks in the cafeteria talking about all the things we wanted in life, who we had crushes on, and Benson always telling me what was COOL aka lots of details about his obsession with RAW DENIM and SUPERdry.

He was always down for an adventure, especially if there was boba involved. He would drive me back home to the Bay during breaks. He was the best road trip buddy, always full of funny stories, dumb jokes, and thoughtful questions. One of the best was “what is Mario’s favorite fabric?” DENIM DENIM DENIM

Derrick posted a photo from this karaoke night, but I wanted to share the full video too.

I met Benson on my first day at BIG. I remember him powering through his awkwardness to approach me to say we both came from USC. He went on to become one of my closest friends at work and in life. At work we all knew him as the ‘baby.’ One of the first stories he told me was about how he stuffed himself into the same revolving door section as his boss on the first day and it was wayyy too small.

My first and most lasting impression of him was that he was so childlike, but also really wise, and I trusted his judgement on all things because he approached everything with so much care. When we were roommates, he would start the day by playing the intro song to La-la-land and we would belt it out loud. He put so much intention into every single hang out, making sure it was always the best day ever. He even made hospital fun, showing us the best things on the Sloan Kettering menu and making us try the chocolate cake.

My nickname for him was 'Benstar' because that's what he was to me, a light. He was an extraordinary friend and I will miss him with all my heart.

In grad school, Benson and I …
Amherst, MA, USA
In grad school, Benson and I formed an improbable bond over basketball when we realized we were following the same NBA game one Friday evening, and he generously shared his “secret streaming sources” so we got to watch on his laptop screen. Since then, we exchanged ALL CAPS messages during tense fourth quarters, marveled at the solidarity when teams were doing 24-second violations in memory of Kobe, and plotted to go watch Celtics at TD garden when tickets became affordable (“can’t sit behind hoop!” His principle). We were so hyped for Steve Kerr’s talk at Harvard and I fought crowds to save him a seat, and Benson ended up late (coming back from Chinatown) and not able to squeeze in - I got him a signature though which he kindly repaid with beer. The 2020 season we held onto bubble basketball as a refreshment during waves of lockdowns while trying to graduate or ease into new jobs. Benson biked over and accompanied me during a nerve-wrecking Clippers Game 7 that lasted past 11 pm, even though he had a project due the next day and Clips lost tragically. In exchange he insisted that I had to root for Jimmy Butler and be a warriors fan the following seasons. Summer of 2021 we got to shoot hoops before his move to nyc, at a court in North End overlooking the ocean where the wind was blowing the ball all over the place yet he was still completing HORSES. When visiting Benson’s building at Amherst college last week (which is growing up so well), I found this basketball court very close by and really hope he’d enjoy that. I was so grateful when Benson hearted my message sharing about Steph Curry’s epic 4000th three-pointers this year, hoping the legend brought him a bit of joy, as a true warrior himself. The league feels so different now and I ll miss watching with you every season, Benson.
Kevin and I visited Benson on…

Kevin and I visited Benson on a random weekend. He housed us and took us to all the best spots in NY. There was always a trail of fun and laughter anywhere he went.
Benson has been my best frien…
2010, Benson’s backyard
Benson has been my best friend since jr high. even though after high school we never once lived in the same city. its amazing to think about how much he has shaped my life. a frequent topic of conversation was what city we would end up in together when we finally settled down, attending each others’ weddings, raising families together. This photo represents all the amazing memories we made during a time when we could easily see each other on a daily basis and is the foundation for why we remained such good friends for so long afterwards.
