OBITUARY
Al Hayes, 92, of Seal Beach CA passed away peacefully on December 23, 2022 after a brief period in hospice care at Brittany House Memory Care in Long Beach, CA.
Alfred and twin brother Albert were born on April 15, 1930 in Blakely, GA to John E. Hayes and Ida Mae Nolan Hayes. In 1948 Alfred and Albert enlisted in the Navy and served aboard the USS Helena. Alfred served 4 years through the Korean War, then settled in Long Beach, CA.
Al started work at the Ford Motor Co Assembly Plant in Long Beach and married Nancy Farrow in 1952. He left Ford and began work as a gardener for the Long Beach City Water Department in 1956. Al and Nancy’s son Edward Alan Hayes was born in 1957. Al volunteered as a Long Beach Police Reserve Officer and over the years made a number of lifelong friends on the police force. Al and Nancy divorced in 1962 after which Ed spent every other weekend and vacations with Al.
In 1965 Al married Stephanie Witt and became stepfather to Stephanie’s 5 year old daughter Karen DeWeese. Al’s wife Stephanie passed away in 1978. Al retired from the Water Department in 1981 and worked in his residential lawn service business until moving to Leisure World in 1989. Al and Leisure World neighbor Lucy Fitch became great friends and were constant companions throughout the rest of Al’s life.
Alfred is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William Hayes and Albert Hayes; five sisters, Johnnie Mae Jackson, Ethel Garrod, Mary Tyler, Irma McDonald Galloway and Claudine Hayes Herrin; wife Stephanie Hayes; son Edward Hayes and daughter in law Linda Quinn (Karen’s spouse).
Survivors include his daughter Karen DeWeese and granddaughter Kelly DeWeese of Long Beach, CA; daughter in law Debbie Hayes (Ed’s spouse) of Harrison, AR; grandsons David Hayes and James Hayes of Missoula, MT; and great grandsons Anthony (James’s son) and Declan (David’s son).
A private memorial service for Al was held June 3, 2023. Al’s ashes will be scattered in a private location at a later date.
