Aegon's obituary

Aegon, our sweet Eggy, passed away unexpectedly on April 13, 2026, at just two years old. His sudden and unexplained passing has left us heartbroken, struggling to understand how a life so full of happiness could be gone so soon. We are profoundly grateful that he was with his dad and brother Beowulf at the end, and take some comfort in knowing it happened quickly.

Born on June 18, 2023, Aegon found us in the most providential way. We first met him on November 29, 2023, when we went to pick Beowulf up from the farm where he was boarding. We were not expecting to meet another dog that day, much less one who would change our lives, but from the moment we saw him, we fell in love. Just over a week later, on December 9, 2023, we made him ours.

He came into our lives just as we were getting married, and from the very beginning became part of the foundation of our home and our life together. He was the first baby we brought home together, the glue of our world, and a beloved presence through every chapter that followed. As our family grew, so did his place within it. He was the best little brother to Baby Onyx and Beowulf, and the most gentle and patient big brother to Big Mac and Lex.

Aegon was dad’s perfect sidekick, always eager to please and learn something new. He loved playing fetch, running around the yard with dad and Beowulf, and joining in on every adventure. He was equally content with a cozy movie night, curled up close and soaking in the comfort of simply being near the people he loved.

He had a special gift for loving others exactly as they were. One of the clearest examples of that was Baby Onyx. His persistent, steady affection for her helped bring her out of her shell, and anyone who knew them could see the quiet sweetness of that bond. That was who he was. He made room for himself in every heart through pure delight, gentleness, and affection.

He was a 70-pound golden retriever who never stopped believing he was a lap dog. He loved nothing more than being as close to us as possible, happily sitting on us as though he were still small enough to fit with ease. He would make his “elephant ears” to be extra cute for mom, chase and chew on his own tail, and follow the people he loved from room to room. He was endlessly proud of every stick he found in the yard, carrying it around like a prize he could not wait to show off. He loved toys and was forever trying to carry two or three at a time, as though one simply was not enough. He never asked for table food, but would always come by politely to ask for an ice cube or a little yogurt.

Aegon never met a stranger. He got along beautifully with every person he met and every dog he encountered, whether at the dog park or on his walks. He moved through the world with an open, joyful heart, and wherever he went, he brought warmth, laughter, and light. His unconditional love and goofiness turned our house into a home and made us better people. He was our sunshine in the truest sense.

What makes this loss so devastating is not only who he was, but all that we believed still lay ahead. We always talked about how lucky our children would be to grow up with such a loyal and devoted dog. He was threaded through every vision we had of the future, into all the big and little moments we thought we still had ahead of us. Losing him so suddenly has left us with a space in our lives that can never be filled and questions that will never be answered.

Though his life was far too short, Aegon knew what it was to be deeply loved. He knew joy, belonging, play, tenderness, and home. He was cherished every day of his life, and he gave back more than words could ever capture. His legacy in our family lives on in the love he gave, the memories he leaves behind, and the way his spirit will remain with us for the rest of our days.

We miss our Eggy with a sorrow deeper than words, and we will carry the love he gave us for the rest of our lives.
