Nate Hicks — 2020, Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rawiga Road, Seville, OH, USA: "Dear friends and family,

My beautiful sister would have turned 42 yesterday. We gathered as a family at her gravesite yesterday and said some prayers and read some bible passages together and laid flowers on her tombstone.

In case anyone ever wants to visit her gravesite, her remains were buried at the Western Reserve National Cemetery near Medina, OH. It is about a 30 min drive from our hometown of Olmsted Falls. It is a beautiful and well maintained cemetery and surrounded by gorgeous Ohio countryside and farmland.

Her gravesite is section 14, site 1107. I pray we all find peace despite our sadness and longing for her presence."

Because that’s the type of friend you are. You always showed up for people. Even if that person was me- inviting you and the girls to a last minute impromptu ice cream party for one of my girls at 7pm on a Sunday night where I promised not to give the kids too much sugar on a school night :) you always showed for people. Allison Marschean — "Micala and I were classmates at the Academy. While I don't recall ever having class with her, I would see her around from time to time since we were in the same Cadet Regiments (1st and 2nd) all 4 years .
She was ALWAYS a pleasure to run into and usually had a big smile on her face. My friendship with her began our first summer at the Academy as we were roommates during BEAST Barracks. There were three of us in a room that summer and we made some fun and funny memories!
My heart hurt so much to hear the news. As a sister in Christ I know I will see her again and for that I am thankful."

Lorelei Felix — "I met Mikey summer of 1997. We were in the same company of Beast barracks our plebe summer at West Point. Mikey even sat at my mess table the first half of the summer. After that first summer, I didn't see her often until our cow and firstie years. We shared the same academic major Engineer Psychology so I saw her quite often, almost every day! What struck me about Mikey - no what how difficult the task, no matter how daunting the challenge, she always approached everything with a smile and had fun. Really! Everyone approaches challenges differently, some with a stern grimace, like they have an ax to grind, or as if they carry some heavy burden. But Mikey always approached every challenge at school like it was a fun game, to be played, won and the accolades to be shared with friends. And she always did it with a carefree easy smile and laugh - something rare in that environment. She wasn't above admitting her weaknesses. I remember her the day after her first triathlon – we asked her how it had gone. She sheepishly admitted that she wasn’t as good at biking and swimming as she was running (everyone knew her talent for running). But then she laughed and said that she was glad she had tried it anyway.
I’m not surprised that she went on to work in a non-profit for children in need. Mikey was always giving. Always. I wish her family and loved ones strength for the journey ahead. Grief never disappears, but we learn to live with it, and ultimately grow from it. I want her daughters to know how strong their mom was, in every way – mind, body and soul. I can still hear her cadence song, clear as day, as she did pushups in on the floor of her baracks room “T-bones are good for you! T-bones are good for me!” Fare thee well Mikey Hicks. I will never forget your strength or your kindness. The heavenly guard has gathered another angel to their ranks – may you shine on eternal.

Micala was such an amazing person and it was an absolute honor to know her as a friend and fellow member of A Family For Every Orphan.

I met Micala when we lived in Germany at the same time. I had a heart for helping orphans but didn't know how to put my passion to work until I met Micala. We connected at our local church and she shared the work she was doing with A Family For Every Orphan. I was instantly drawn to her and in awe of her optimism, her sense of hope, her passion and her overall spirit.

We met for coffee chats at our local bakery on many Fridays to talk about life and balancing being wives and mothers with work. We excitedly talked about what our futures held and prayed for each other and for wisdom for our choices and decisions.

Though I only knew Micala for a short time, she was an immediate inspiration in my life. Her passion for helping others and her incredible work ethic was simply contagious and she helped me to raise my level of passion and contribution just by seeing her example of what she was doing.

I also had the opportunity to witness first hand how she constantly lifted everyone up and gave accolades for the work everyone was doing in A Family For Every Orphan. She was so dedicated getting up for 3:00 a.m. conference calls (due to being in a different timezone) and was always being incredibly prepared for all our board meetings and really exemplifying leadership in so many ways.

Her influence will continue to live on in so many lives that she has touched in her short time on earth and I am so honored to be one of those lives that she touched and inspired so positively going forward.

To her family and close friends - please take heart in knowing that you will see her again and often if you are looking for her. She is most certainly in her girls’ faces. Maybe you can see her bounding, determined step in their walks or they inherited her infectious laugh. Perhaps her little quirks and mannerisms appear, or her passions and interests shine through them. The leadership and models that she laid out are likely followed by many, not realizing it until they stop and think about where it all came from. Molly Borden Heatherly — "I had the complete pleasure of meeting Micala, Jason and their beautiful girls while being stationed together in Wiesbsden.

It was my sister, Heidi Borden Anderson (who shared a lifelong friendship with Micala) that pieced together Micala and I were living in the same city! Ironically, we lived 1 street over from each other, but didn’t actually meet each other until a few days before Christmas, December 2017! We almost literally ran into each other while shopping at the commissary (on post grocery store). She stopped me and we instantly hit it off!! I am sure part of it was because we both had my sister in common, but the other part was because Micala was one of those people you just knew the second or minute you met her, you would truly love her and her amazing personality!!

Micala had this presents about her that would bring a smile to your face even if you were having the worst day ever. She always had a smile on her face and brought so much joy to me knowing her for such a short time!

She represented a true Catholic Christian woman and truly lived her life the way all believers should live. What an amazing role model she was for her girls.

Sending sincere condolences and continued prayers for Jason, the girls, parents, siblings and extended family. May you find peace in the memories you hold near and dear to your hearts.

David Cibik — "I got to spend a couple years with Mikey in the F2 Zoo, our West Point company. She was cool enough to hang with the boys and even the underclassmen! One quick story I'll always remember: I was learning to play guitar one year, and had a buddy Pete Bakke over on the keys, and she heard it, and promptly grabbed her violin and was jamming with us less than 5 minutes later! Did we sound good? No! Did we have fun? Yep! And on her way out, she tripped and fell putting her violin away and hit the corner of her eye on the corner of the sink, and had to go to the hospital immediately for stitches! Was she a little clumsy? Yep! And did we love her? Yes!!!!!!!!!!!! She was a beautiful soul and I am so deeply saddened for every single person that knew her and mourns her loss. I also knew her as a Catholic and Christian and Clevelander, and her spirit shined everyday. Heaven is quite the perfect place for a person like that. John 16:33

Heidi Anderson — "Craig and I are deeply saddened to hear this devastating news of our dear friend, Micala.

She was one of the kindest and sweetest people I knew with such a loving heart, a beautiful spirit, and a shining example of Christ.

Micala and I were West Point classmates and although we were friendly there, we didn't become lifelong friends until we were both stationed at Ft. Lewis together. I am so thankful and grateful our lives crossed again because we were able to share so many laughs on our long runs in and around Ft. Lewis as well as life milestones together like meeting our husbands and sharing in the joy and excitement of knowing we found the one, having children about the same time and experiencing motherhood together. Although that was the only time we lived near each other, she never made the miles between us seem distant.

Micala did everything with her whole heart. As a West Point cadet, she was the very first female to graduate from the rigorous and physically demanding Sapper School. As an Engineer Company Commander, I remember her saying she would wake up between 4-430am so she could get work done before her actual day started at 630am with Physical Training (PT) with her Soldiers. Before becoming a mother, she shared Easter brunch with my husband and me along with some other friends. She baked an Easter Bunny cake because she wanted the few young children who were present to enjoy it. Through her non-profit organization, she helped numerous orphans find loving families. She loved Jason and their 4 beautiful girls more than life itself. She was a true gem with a smile that lightened any room and could change your mood for the better. She will be greatly missed!
