Leora's illness and death were sudden and shocking for us all. Even having lived through 3+ weeks at the hospital, usually being there from before 7am until 4:30 or 5pm every day, it is hard to comprehend how this happened. Below is a brief summary of events, though obviously this only glosses over the details.

On October 5th, Leora was found by her husband to be relatively unresponsive and was hospitalized with pneumococcal meningitis (a bacterial meningitis) and multiple subsequent strokes. She never regained conscious awareness again. After a few weeks of ongoing fever and additional complications, diagnostic scans showed the damage to her brain had worsened materially. Her family agreed with doctors that there was no realistic chance of the quality of life that Leora would want. The focus of care shifted on October 21st to only provide comfort and eliminate any chance of suffering. Leora died on October 28th at approximately 3:15pm. Her husband and father were with her in the room at the moment of her passing.
