This photo will always be close to my heart as His Eminence Anthony Soter held mine (Stanley) and my late wife (Saleth Mary)'s hand for the photo when we visited Him in 1998 from Melaka. We were part of the Catholic Senior Fellowship of St Francis Xavier Church,Melaka. Together with us in the photo is Sim Been Teck & Collin Goh. I was humbled by His Eminence's love, warmth and kindness. May His Soul Rest in Peace in the Mercy of God.

Marie Quah — "Taiping Catholic Church

I was baptized in 1965
Fr Soter was posted to Taiping not long after.
Since my baptism, I was a regular visitor at the parish house.
The parish was indeed my 2nd home.

I saw, from the start, Father was simple, straightforward, and always on the lookout for his parishioners and their needs, calling forth life in them at every opportunity.
Thus it was, that, as a person so new to the faith, I became a member of the first parish council.

Fr Soter invited me to attend A Movement For A Better World retreat.
Imagine my family's reaction... so filled with fear that I might become a religious.
Actually, that was my secret desire, and Father probably thought I was a potential candidate.
Many of my friends thought so too.

But it was at this retreat that I realized I was on the wrong track. Religious life was not for me.
I was terribly disappointed with God.
But I yielded, and went so far as to tell God,
"If You want me to get married, You will have to find someone for me, and soon, please, as I'm getting on in years."

2 months later, this Chinese man comes into my life.
I told God,
You must be joking.
But God did nothing, probably smiling and saying "you wait and see".

This was not going to be easy.
Having difficulty bringing up the matter with my family, I went to my 2nd home, my parish.

One priest said,
All marriages are mixed marriages.
No two families are the same.
You have to work at your marriage, every couple.

Fr Soter said,
He looks like a rock.

The priest who had baptized me, took the trouble to do some character investigation....imagine that...and concluded he was a fine man.

I thus took the bold step to enter into this relationship.

When it was time for marriage, we had to get married in Penang in Felix's parish.
To our utter surprise, Fr Soter appeared. He was the celebrant! It made our day.
This sensitive man of God, Fr Soter, knowing what we were going through, came to be with us, celebrate our union, and give us his joyful support.

It didn't end there. Father continued to journey with us. Our eldest son was born prematurely and fell critically ill.
Fr Soter, who was at the time in the Philippines, said, "Don't worry. As long as there's life, there's hope.
I'm now going to the Clare Sisters . They will pray for your baby."
Prayers went up for our son from all over, as he hovered between life and death for 2 months in the incubator.
Finally he was discharged, with a lot of guidelines on how to care for him for 6months.

The discharge was sudden, and we had no baby sitter.
Fr Soter, now back from the Philippines, said
"Don't worry. We pray tonight and sleep. Tomorrow we look for a baby sitter. God will provide."
Next day, Father went around with our sacristan, and came with this young girl who was truly heaven sent.

Fr Soter left Taiping, but never forgot us and we kept in touch.

In 1995, he was already Archbishop. He came and was the main celebrant at our Silver Jubilee celebration.
By this time, Felix had blended so well into the family, who saw he was truly a rock for me and the children, the Jubilee Mass was more like our wedding Mass.

As time went by, I fell ill. At one point, so ill, that Archbishop came to visit, speaking words of encouragement and praying for both of us.
His parting words to me,
"Write the story of your life".
When I told him I had already done so as my 70th birthday gift for our 3 sons, he asked for a copy.

Then, Archbishop himself fell ill. But that didn't stop him reaching out, dropping by whenever he had opportunity to be in Taiping.
When he could no longer travel, he sent messages through Sister Fatima, even sending devotional materials.

Such a man, so kind, so thoughtful, so sensitive, so caring.

Together with our family, and the so many you have reached out to, who mourn your loss, I say, as did the repentant thief,
"Fr Soter,
Remember us before the throne of God.
You have earned your rest, you who laboured tirelessly in our Father's vineyard"

In loving memory of our beloved
Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez

Renik Fair — "May his humble soul Rest In Peace! This big-hearted man was truly a blessing to many borne by testimonies from those touched by him. I am so greatly awed by this same man who touched my mum, wife Melina Fair and me when we visited him earlier this year. He knew my late father really well as they were both seminarians in the 50’s, studied in Ponggol Seminary in Singapore. My late dad left eventually to become a teacher."
Lydia Gomez1994, Kuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: "Sometime in 1994, when His Eminence - then Archbishop - had come to CIC Port Dickson to celebrate confirmation mass, my family volunteered to drive him back to KL. The trip took more than a couple of hours - it rained heavily. He was seated in the front, talking mostly to my father who was driving. When we reached, he invited us into his house. I recall clearly how warm and gentle he was with my older brother and I. We were rather reserved at first, but His Eminence’s humility put us at complete ease as we spoke to him. I remember him chatting with us as he offered us some freshly cut fruits. Before we left, he gave each of us a special rosary.

Looking back now - and seeing other wonderful stories pouring in - I realise that his unassuming and accessible nature gave many of us room to know him through different lenses. For me, the lens was that of a 12-year-old’s. It’s a memory that has stayed with me ever since. Thank you for your leadership, Cardinal Soter. May perpetual light shine upon your exemplary, kind soul."

Jean Teh — "Thank you dear Cardinal Anthony Soter Fernandez for being the Lord’s shepherd and guiding hands to all Catholics, religious, Clergy and everyone whose heart you have touched. You have certainly left behind a great legacy and a sterling example of a great steward in the Lord’s vineyard – walking justly, responsibly and humbly at His service. Thank you for being the then Archbishop who confirmed me some 35 years ago .. memories of your simple unassuming and ‘calling people by their first names’ remind me of the Lord’s own affirmation – I know my sheep and my sheep knows me!! [John 10:14] Rest in Peace and in the Eternal Glory of the Lord dear Cardinal Fernandez. [Jean LSK Teh]"

We hosted my late father in law's death anniversary of 10 years. We served lunch for all the residing priests, residents, sisters at the little sisters of the poor. We encountered his eminence, Soter Fernandez, so joyful to see us and welcomed us. Our family served him and the other residents and the nuns lunch and he was touched and through his face expression, he valued family as the main importance. I remember very clearly like it was yesterday that when he came a few times to the Church of the Good Shepherd, and I was in hospitality to receive him, he will always call me 'thambi' and a contagious smile. You will be deeply missed. May his soul rest in peace.

Lyn Kam1977, 1977-1979 College General, Penang: "I worked in College General in the late 1970s when His Eminence was the Rector and upon his ordination as a Bishop, part-time at No. 1 Bell Road, Penang. I was also requested to tutor his workers' poor, young children. My parents and I were also invited to share meals at his home . Cardinal was a great distinguished, gentle man of God & a wonderful gift to all who met him. He had so much passion in his work, shared so much kindness, humility & love coupled with a great memory of everyone and dates. He gave me the best gift on one of my birthdays (he was away from College General & did not see me on that day) with a surprise visit/ presence at my house, seated comfortably chatting with my parents when I came home from work. I also have cherished gifts of key chains, first-day covers from him. He touched our lives and he will forever stay in our hearts, such memories has become a treasure. My sincere condolences to his family, relatives, friends, all Priests and Catholics. May his soul RIP.

Marilyn Robert & family, Penang. — "Cardinal Soter Fernandez, you were a true embodiment of what it is to follow God’s will. You were a true testament of God’s love – a person of SUBSTANCE, CHARACTER, JOY, SIMPLICITY, HOPE, GENTLENESS, PEACE and above all, LOVE. You were a reflection of what it means to live in the moment, to just BE in the here and now. You radiated your love and encouragement through those whom you inspired, whether near or far, just by your gentle, caring, loving words . The Spirit moved and worked in you and through you. Thank you Cardinal Soter for having touched our lives so beautifully with yours. Rest in Peace. You are now in God’s Heavenly, Warm, Loving Embrace. Do continue to pray for us all, Cardinal Soter Fernandez. We will miss you so dearly."

Lucille Dass — "Remembering Cardinal Soter – personally speaking…
During Herald’s 25th anniversary dinner celebration on September 8th last year (2019), held at the St John’s Cathedral Community Hall after Mass, I was seated at a table a little away from him. When he caught my eye, he signalled me to go over to him. I did, and gave him my usual hug. Then he caught my hands in both of his and told me that he enjoyed reading all my articles: in the CANews, Herald, and even in the Star-Education pages! He also enjoyed the poems and the inspirational quotes (I’d earlier presented him a compilation copy of my quotes, at the College General event to celebrate his elevation as Malaysia’s first cardinal). I was pleasantly surprised at this. He then encouraged me, “Never stop writing.”
Earlier in June, My husband and I greeted him briefly at our Cathedral, when we celebrated the golden jubilee of our Church of the Holy Spirit, Penang. He made it a point to tell me that he had read my latest article in CANews (May issue) and liked it. I’m truly grateful to have had a fan in him!
Sam, our media ministry co-ordinator happened to take a snapshot of us engaged in this brief interlude – it has now become a much treasured keepsake!
Looking further back, I actually first met our cardinal in the 80s – when together with my husband, we helped in the BM translation of the Mass for him. He was determined to use BM when he celebrated Mass for the students. He reasoned that they were more proficient in BM, in addition to the fact that BM is our national language. He was convinced that Mass in BM made the celebration more accessible and meaningful to them.
Again, as a member of the Malaysian Catechetical Commission, I had the opportunity to learn and grow from his fatherly persona as we worked through the Catechetical Series with him as advisor. Gentle, yet he was resolute, and could be a taxing taskmaster because of his passion for God’s Word and work!
He did indeed live up to his name: SOTER – a deliverer/saviour – in more ways than one.
I am inspired to compose this simple verse in his name… it tells of how I personally saw him (See slide). May he rest forever in the loving embrace of Our Lord. Amen.

A simple priest is all he wanted to be!
He asked me to bless him!
It should have been the other way round!
Whenever I visited him, he would always bring me together with whoever with me and with him to a meal at a chinese restaurant nearby or a mamak hawker under some trees. He always insisted on paying the bill.
Such is his hospitality!"

KarenValerie Netto — "MY SPIRITUAL JOURNEY. It all began in 1986, when Cardinal ANTHONY SOTER FERNANDEZ was bishop. He celebrated my Confirmation mass along with the rest of my friends, which was said to be the biggest group of over 70 confirmants in 1986 . I was just 15+ then. After that, Bishop Soter insisted I taught Catechism at 17+. At first, I resisted as I felt, I was too young and not ready but he said, I can do it. He had so much of faith in me . So ,I gracefully obeyed him . Then he encouraged me to do something for World Peace Year in 1986. I participated in an art competition up to his satisfaction and he presented me with a certificate for my artwork. Later in the years, when my aged dad was placed in a nursing home , he took the initiative just a few years ago to visit my dad at Berniece's Catholic nursing home in jalan Ipoh. When Rev.Fr. Edward Soosay passed away, Cardinal Soter bumped into me at Saint Joseph's church and asked me " Where is your dad?". I showed him to my dad from afar. Being wheelchair bound my dad was happy to hear that cardinal SOTER had asked about him. Cardinal insisted to sit beside my dad in church to exchange a long conversation. After the funeral mass was over, in our seperate ways we headed to the Kajang Catholic cemetery. Half way to the grave Cardinal Soter suddenly grabbed my hand. He wanted to pay his last respect. So I carefully led him down the muddy path . 6 months later ,I visited the LSP but couldn't meet cardinal SOTER. It was bad timing and so I sent him a tee shirt of the scenery of Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal, later by post. After he received the tee shirt ,he called me up from his private number and thanked me many times for it . He was happy to have his full name on the tee shirt claiming nobody had given him a tee shirt with his name on it. This touched me too. Thank you Cardinal Soter for all the good deeds you have done for my dad and myself during our spiritual journey. Thank you for being the caring, loving, humble person that you were on earth. I will offer masses in the repose of your soul that you may rest in peace. When you reach heaven please pray for us. Thank you very much. Valerie K. Netto"

I’ve had the kind fortune to see many beautiful tender moments that Cardinal Soter had with people in private. One particular comes to mine, this was taken about a week before Christmas last year. Cardinal was spending time with his favorite residents of Asrama Cahaya, these elderly women with disabilities ranging from hearing, speech and sight impairments to mental disabilities. Approximately 35 women above the age of 60. Most occupants have been with the home since they were young having been abandoned as children. Cardinal has been visiting them for about 4 decades as his residence was just across the road when he was Archbishop of KL. He spent that whole morning with them, wheeling them around, listening to their stories, hearing their confessions.. He knew them by name! They had a very special place in his heart and I am sure he did as well to them. It brought so much joy just to see him being with them, taking the time of just being in the moment. He even asked if my Mum was with me of which I brought her to see him. I realised now that every time I would see Cardinal, he would always without fail ask about my Mum and my family’s well-being.. right up to till the very end! It speaks volumes about the kind of man he was, his genuine love for others and how he carried it with such humility and that sense of dignity that was a lot bigger than himself. He met real Saints in his lifetime but I know for a man who carried the embodiment of Christ was nothing short of being an everyday Saint himself. I am going to miss these simple yet beautiful moments and how precious they were.

Tq.. Cardinal Soter.. a father a shepherd.. you have inspired me in many ways .. I remember very clearly how excited I was to meet you when I was 16 yrs old as a young messenger for BEC Ampang town helping my mom who was the BEC leader then... you came with fr peter the pp of st Anthony kl , you went around on pastoral visit , ascension chapel ampang Tasek, all becs zones , visiting communities listening n encouraging us to build our faith communities based on the word shared n lived in the BEC. You were very firm on the point to set aside every Wednesday of the week for the BEC. We saw the BECs growing... you have given Us the gud fiery spirit of ‘aggiornamento’1976.I came to see you in 1995, telling my desire to be a priest, you told me “ go continue doing your work n pray ...” and then Came the surprise, you sent me a letter accepting me to enter seminary college general, Penang in 1996. I asked you” your grace , what shall I bring along to the seminary?” You answered , “ leave behind all your asayo files , just bring your self alone”. ( I was actively involved In asayo - youth office then) ... throughout my formative yrs... you have very firmly corrected, challenged, taught, filled me with your gud examples lived n your spiritual life . Thank you! You loved st joseph ! Once I was helping to clear some things in your room at Cardign hse, I saw a tiny wooden statue of st joseph beside de bed, and you told me , how miraculous st joseph is to you. Always a joy to visit...
Sandy T2014: "Always a joy to visit..."
Julie LimKuala Lumpur, Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: "One of my first personal encounters with Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez was in the late 90s when I was a journalist with Herald – The Catholic Weekly.

I was assigned to cover an event and to get a comment from Cardinal Soter after that. I don’t remember now what the event was about, but I do remember thinking, “Die-lah, must interview the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur.

“How should I start the conversation?

“Will he be impatient considering he’s an Archbishop?”

However all my doubts were unfounded.

Cardinal Soter turned out to be humble, patient and kind. We sat in a corner whilst the event participants walked around. He spoke with conviction and started speaking quite fast but slowed down so that I could jot down his comments accurately. At that time we didn’t have canggih manggih mobile phones that could record.

When Cardinal Soter was Spiritual Father of the House at College General, I travelled to Penang to interview him for a project. During lunch, I observed that after finishing his meal, he would pick every morsel of food and every grain of rice from his plate until it was wiped clean. Clearly this was a man who did not waste food.

During his tenure as Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur, he placed great emphasis on Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC). In October 2001, he declared that Wednesday evenings be reserved exclusively for BEC related activities, something which my BEC is following diligently to this day. The importance of BECs came to light again during this pandemic when Masses resumed in June 2020 and those who wish to attend Mass had to register through their BEC. As a result of this, my BEC actually grew by about 3 families. Cardinal Soter certainly had pastoral foresight.

As we bid farewell to Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez, let us not mourn but instead celebrate the Glory and Wisdom of God that shone so brightly through his humility and leadership."

During the last years of His Eminence's journey in life, I had the privilege to meet him in a handful of occasions. Whenever i was up close with him, he always had a tendency to hold my hand. Maybe this was something he did to most people. However, while he would hold my hand, he held it in a such a way that it wouldn't be easy for me to let go, both physically and emotionally. Looking back, I think that's a reflection on how Catholicism ought to be, that once you hold on to Christ, you shouldn't let go no matter what. My prayers go for his soul, that God would hold him in the same manner. Requiescat in Pace

Rev Sean Prasad — "Dear Bishop Julian Leow Beng Kim and the Catholic family,

We take this opportunity not only to express our sincere condolence but more importantly is to acknowledge and celebrate the life of His Eminence Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez , Archbishop Emeritus of Kuala Lumpur Archdiocese.
His Eminence was the first Cardinal of Malaysia which is clearly one of the highest honors’ and confirms the obvious, that he was an exceptional man. Greatness is not only in titles one earns but in humility. We are told of many accounts of his humility and love for people. His fine Christian attributes precedes his many accolades. As such, we , the Christians community take this opportunity to bid him a temporary farewell while saluting his faithfulness and sincere service to his calling. “Well done good and faithful servant” Matt 25:23 .

I recalled how His Eminence reach out to me when he saw me not myself 2 years ago, I requested him to pray for the soul of my dad. His Eminence asked why? With teary eyes, I show His Eminence photo my dad and told him my dad has returned to the Lord. His Eminence looked at me and then putting his hand unto my hand comforted me. After few minutes later, His Eminence jokingly and said Don't worry dear, there are so many spiritual daddys around. God make sure they will take care of you. Thank you Eminence. Thanks for your wisdom, guidance, I am what I am because of the unconditional love you gave me. Will cherish all the memories."

Thank you Your Eminence for everything you do. For all your advice, wisdom, jokes, anecdotes. For all those times you stood by me, For all the truth that you made me see, For all the joy you brought to my life, For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true, For all the love I found in you. I'll be forever thankful, Your Eminence, You're the one who held me up, Never let me fall, You're the one who saw me through through it all, You were my strength when I was weak, You were my voice when I couldn't speak. You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me, Lifted me up when I couldn't reach, You gave me faith 'cause you believed, I'm everything I am
Because you loved me. Thank You. Gotta miss you very much. Rest in peace. :'( :'( :'("

As the song Stand By Me ringing my ear, since the news of your passing fresh on my mind, I've learned to live for each day And take it as a blessing, Knowing it may not always be this way. I've learned that when everything goes wrong to never give up on what is right
Because it can only make you strong. I've learned that even when you're in a lot of pain, You've got to hold yourself together so you won't feel like you're going insane. I've learned how to hold the tears when I want to cry because all I have is memories but I couldn't hold on anymore as I came to pay my last respect, I let go the tears as I pray in silently. Wish is not MCO, I would be comforted and hugged by your spiritual sons but because MCO due to Covid19 Pandemic, I just have to cross my arms and imagine being comforted nd just want to ask God why. It's been 2 days since you passed away, I've learned a life can be taken in the blink of an eye and only Heaven really knows when I will have to say
Goodbye. Fare the well my truth humble friend. Till we meet again."

Paul Fernandez2017, Church of The Visitation, Seremban., Jalan Yam Tuan, Bandar Seremban, Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia: "About 3 years ago on 16th September 2017, The Church of The Visitation, Seremban was honoured to receive Malaysia’s first Cardinal of The Roman Catholic Church, His Eminence Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez. The 85 years old who was raised to the rank of a Cardinal by Pope Francis on 19th November 2016 were among the VIP guests who attended the second edition of Go MAD (Make A Difference) carnival themed “Unity in Divinity” held on Hari Malaysia Day in the Church ground. Rev Fr George Harrison and Rev Fr Andrew Kooi was the Parish and Assistant Parish Priest at that time. Guest of Honour at the event was YB Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Kurup, Minister in the Prime Minister’s department. His Eminence delivered his speech where he congratulated the young people of the Parish for organizing the event and encouraged them to go and make a difference in their lives to promote unity, peace and bridge building with others and uphold the Rukun Negara (the 5 National Principles). He made a reference to Pope Francis’s World Day of Prayer for Peace where the Holy Father said, “May charity and non-violence govern how we treat each another”. He ended his speech with a reminder to all that, “we belong to one race – the human race and we have one language – the language of love.”.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
the rains fall soft upon your fields,
and until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

Death leaves a headache no one can heal; Love leaves a memory no can steal.

Stan Amaladas2020, Winnipeg, MB, Canada: "While death has ended his earthly existence, today, I imagine this precious human being, sitting alongside all other priests, bishops, cardinals, and laity who were called Home before him - enjoying a meal and joyful conversations with Jesus and his friends.

I remember dear Cardinal Soter Fernandez well. He was our Parish Priest @ St. Louis Church, in Taiping. That was quite a while back. At that time, he was joined by Fr. Robbin Andrews, and the late Fr. Felix Michael. I remember calling them Three Musketeers! However, unlike the Musketeers, they did not draw swords with those whom they served. Instead they came with the Scriptures and the Rosary in their hands. And they shared their peace and joy of being priests.

If there is one word I would use to define Cardinal Soter Fernandez, or whom I fondly remember as Fr. Soter, it is this: Simplicity. He embodied simplicity in how he lived his life; he embodied simplicity in how he related with others. Thank you Cardinal Fernandez (Fr. Soter), for teaching me the value and joy of simplicity.

Yes, death has ended your earthly existence. However, it has not ended our relationship. And you will be remembered well as long as I live. I am sure many others whom you have touched will do the same.

Enjoy your time with others in your Heavenly home. I am told that this time, it is eternal! Goodbye my dear friend. May you rest in peace. And here's hoping to see you on the other side!

Love
Stan

Evelyn Francis — "Dearest Cardinal Soter

You lived Well! You Completed the Race Well! You have kept the Faith Well! – Rest in Peace

Dedicating this beautiful poem - Farewell (Anne Bronte 1820-1847) in memory of you, for a life lived Well

Farewell to Thee! But not farewell
To all my fondest thoughts of Thee;
Within my heart they still shall dwell
And they shall cheer and comfort me.

Life seems more sweet that Thou didst live
And men more true that Thou wert one;
Nothing is lost that Thou didst give,
Nothing destroyed that Thou hast done.

Yayasan Tan Sri Dominic Vendargon — "Yayasan Tan Sri Dominic Vendargon and the Stella Maris group of schools would have been but a dream without the vision, courage, direction and steadfast determination of one man, His Eminence Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez. From its first school in 1996, the Foundation today owns and operates 4 private schools including one offering an international curriculum. All four schools stand brightly lit as stars born from the burning quest of one man. This is his legacy in affordable holistic education, one that is driven by our vision of faith. This is his testament and whilst we may have lost our founder and mentor, a trusted ally and our truest friend, we look at what he has left us and we stand thankful and grateful to God for this great and loyal servant of His. His Eminence Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez inspired us with his wisdom, his simplicity, his charism and his compassion, always urging us along to grow and expand with an engaging smile that betrayed a resolute determination to move beyond, despite handicaps, for "whatever your cross, whatever your pain”, he would say, “work in the Lord's vineyard is always the most difficult but be encouraged, for the Lord is with you". To the Lord our God, our beloved shepherd and friend His Eminence Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez returns in glory and honour free of all pain happy to be with the Father Almighty in the company of the righteous, the saints and angels and all loyal and faithful servants of God. God bless you Eminence with eternal and everlasting comfort, peace and joy.
With love from members of the Council of Directors, Yayasan Tan Sri Dominic Vendargon and all Boards of Governors in Stella Maris Schools."

Angeline Lee — "As I pen down my thoughts, tears flow down my eyes. Couldnt believe you lost the battle against cancer. The angels looked down from heaven one night. They searched for miles afar, And deep within the distance They could see a shining star. They knew that very instant that the star was theirs to gain, so they took you up to heaven, forever to remain. Your Eminence, Look down on us from heaven. Keep us free from hurt and pain. You'll always be within my heart until we meet again. :'( :'( :'("

Joachim Fernandez — "We shall miss the late Cardinal Soter Fernandez. Our family has had so many experiences with his eminence. My sister remembers being confirmed by you in Kota Bahru while you were bishop for the Penang Diocese. The many times you came to our house for meals while in Kota Bharu was a joy. My mother enjoyed cooking for, not just you but any priest and nuns from the parish. Serving mass as an alter server with you presiding mass was an honour. And most recently helping you to walk while in St Joseph’s Sentul, offering my arm in assistance was again my honour. My regret was not being able to visit you on the Little Sisters of the Poor. You in your simplicity gave us so much strength, hope and faith in serving our Lord Jesus Christ and you continue to encourage us to be the best servants we can be. Rest well dear faithful servant of God for you have served Him well and ministered to your last days. Eternal rest grant unto You oh Lord, and let the Perpetual Light shine upon him. May his soul rest in peace. Amen"
Angeline Lee — "Dear Cardinal Soter, You strove to live alone, To talk and walk around, But as the illness (Cancer) was relentless, You were forced to give-up ground. God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be so he put His arms around you and whispered "Come with me."
With tearful eyes we watched you. when I saw you sleeping,
So peaceful and free from pain I could not wish you back,
To suffer that again. You did not deserve to suffer more
So He set you down to rest. To God's garden you are surely bound,
So to sit with all the best. And though we loved you dearly We couldn't make you stay. Your golden heart stopped beating, Your tired hands put to rest God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. As much as we love you. God love you more. Goodbye my dear friend, Father/Grandfather figure Cardinal Soter. Till we meet again."
Angeline Lee — "Dear Cardinal, You walk beside me every day. You're here in all I do and say. At night I close my eyes and pray To someone who took you away. My thoughts are all in disarray. My tears are public, on display. I wish that you were here today, That you could take my pain away. I don't go out, got feet of clay. I know you're here so want to stay. I wish I could relive that day. I would have washed your pain away. Memories like a DVD play, Memories of that awful day. So much that I wanted to say. That day someone took you away. My thoughts don't move; they never may, Won't even meet me half the way, So till we meet on God's highway, I'll sit and dream my life away. I send my love to heaven today, Rest in peace. Cardinal. Gotta miss your smile and laughter. Suffer no more."

Richard Robless — "The Catholic Women's League has very fond memories of our beloved Anthony Soter Cardinal Fernandez. Our first contact with His Eminence was soon after he was installed as the Archbishop of Kuala Lumpur on Novv10, 1983. It was a courtesy call to introduce ourselves and to brief him on our work and activities. His support was spontaneous and his interest most inspiring when he revealed his concern for the weak and the downtrodden, the poor and the abused. His love and compassion for others showed through his simplicity and smile and this we will forever treasure for it has helped to guide us in our work with and for others ever since. There was never a time that he would say no to any request from us. He was always happy to attend our activities and to encourage us in fulfilling our mission. The ladies loved and had great respect for the Cardinal, for his love, care, kindness, humility and tenderness. He always had his smile and we, the Catholic Women's League will most dearly miss him. Goodbye our beloved Cardinal Soter. Please look down on us and pray for us for we know that God has taken you up to be with Him in His Kingdom. May your soul Rest in Peace.
From members of the Catholic Women's League."
