Rancier, a crafter of furniture in Manlius begins to supply coffins and undertaking services in 1865 from a building at the intersection of Fayette and Seneca Streets (currently the site of the medical center). During the 1880’s the business moved to a stone building a few doors east. Retiring in 1887, Rancier is succeeded by A.A. McKee, F.E. Dewey, and Bronson Clark.

Mr. Cole also establishes a coal company and an insurance agency in the village. Harry A. Goodfellow joins Mr. Cole in 1925 and purchases the firm in 1939 upon Mr. Cole’s retirement. Wilber “Bud” Newell joins Mr. Goodfellow in 1946, purchases the business in 1952 and offers funeral services from a home on Academy Street. He then purchases the former Baptist Church parsonage on Pleasant Street to create the Newell Funeral Home.
Upon Mr. Newell’s retirement in 1978, Lawrence A. Fay continues the business as the Newell-Fay Funeral Home for twenty years before retiring in 1999. The funeral home is now owned by the Schepp family who constructed a new facility in 2004 to serve the community. -
