- "The deceased passed away on 01/01/2020 and James Robinson (aka JR) requested the social security number of... Read more the deceased (in which the daughters gave) to grant release of the body from the hospital and to him. Where the body went upon release from the hospital is unknown. Prior to leaving the hospital, the daughters requested a meeting with James Robinson to go over the details of funeral arrangements and to arrange the funeral for Saturday, 01/25/2020 due to their very active military and academic responsibilities. James Robinson told them he would call to set up a meeting with them (face-to-face) at 6:00 pm on 01/20/20 (day of deceased death) to discuss arrangements and to answer any questions. At 6:00 pm, James Robinson had not called. At 6:45 pm on 01/20/20, the deceased ex-wife called (on behalf of her daughters) to find out what was the delay and why the family could not meet at his place of business. James Robinson stated he was running late and would call in a few minutes to meet with the family. When asked why we had to set up a designated place for the meeting, he stated his office was in Brooklyn, NY and it would be convenient to meet the family somewhere in Essex County, NJ. James Robinson never called or met the family on 01/20/20.
On Tuesday, 01/21/2020, there were a total of 11 phone call efforts to communicated with James Robinson in which several went to voice mail. Two of these phone calls with James Robinson us that the funeral would be on Wednesday, 01/29/2020, at the request of the deceased brother’s (lives in Florida) because he had to attend a funeral on 01/25/2020 in Florida. James Robinson ignored the daughters request to have the funeral on 01/25/20 and had not communicated, to the daughters, change of funeral date. On 01/21/2020, a second call, from deceased ex-wife on behalf of her daughters, requested a copy of the death certificate. James Robinson informed he would get the daughters a death certificate, and the girlfriend (of deceased) was doing the obituary, selecting the clothes for the deceased, and handling all other expenses. This was not a discussion with the daughters and a formal meeting did not happen. When we requested the death certificate for third time and I (ex-wife) stated it was his responsibility to give it to me, James Robinson said, “I do not have to give you a fucking thing” and hung up the phone.
Disgusted with James Robinson’s funeral business ethics and protocols, negative professionalism and customer relations with the daughters (and ex-wife), lack of confidentiality (engagement of non-immediate family members), and non-disclosure of funeral home physical location or shallow transparency (e.g. – incorporation status with states of NY and NJ, website, and online) another phone call was not placed to James Robinson, from the ex-wife, until Saturday morning 01/25/2020.
On 01/25/2020, the ex-wife, (on behalf of the daughters) called James Robinson, approximately 8:33 am, to ask the logistics of the daughter’s deceased Dad. James Robinson state the funeral was set to Friday, 01/31/2020 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 119 Camden Street, Newark, NJ; the viewing was scheduled from 10a – 11:00a and the funeral would be from 11a – 12p. During this call, James Robinson stated non-immediate family member's wishes for the funeral were granted (the date, the place, and the time for the funeral) without any communication with the immediate family members. This phone call generated James Robinson stating the following: “As we speak, I am dressing up the deceased [call the deceased by name], he looks good and he hears you. I have a favor to ask, can you write up the obituary? The sister and brother [non-immediate family] can’t do it. They can’t write and ignorant ”. I [ex-wife], informed him I would do the obituary. I requested his email address to email the items to him. On 01/25/2020 at 10:26 am, a call came from James Robinson’s wife, Rita Robinson, who requested to send pictures (about 6) of the deceased and answered my questions on how to write up the obituary. She was nice and professional. Rita verified the email address James had given earlier. On 01/25/2020 at 3:26 pm, the eulogy was sent to her email address which was verified by the recipient via phone call and digital receipt to the sender.
There was not any further communication with James Robinson until the day of the funeral on Friday, 01/31/2020. James Robinson, again, made changes to the obituary by altering proprietary property (pictures) of the immediate family without permission, omitted and misspelled daughter’s names, added non-immediate people names, and stated the place of interment as Evergreen Cemetery, Hillside, NJ (not Fairmount Cemetery) for the deceased. Further discovery throughout this event were the following: the vehicles (hearse and family cars) were rented and not owned by James Robinson (still unsure of where his place of business is located); upon arriving to Evergreen Cemetery, informed James Robinson had not called ahead of time to arrange for a funeral for the deceased and an additional cost of $3200 was required to bury at that time; and, informed just about everyone in the funeral procession of the expense.
It was at this time, I (ex-wife) who was silent up to this point, engaged in conversation with James Robinson. I asked him why was the deceased being buried at Evergreen and not Fairmount. He stated one of the deceased distant relatives confirmed this was where the mom was buried and the cemetery verified an interred person with the exact same name on the property. I told James Robinson to meet me over at Fairmount Cemetery to see if we could get the body buried that day. James Robinson arrived at Fairmount before me and was speaking to the cemetery administrator who informed both of us (with a witness to the conversation) to bury the body would cost $5,200. James Robinson never disclosed that New Jersey Medicaid Program had paid $2,246 towards burial. I had called and spoke with the Medicaid Burial Unit on 01/21/2020 at 11:04 am who verified deceased’s eligibility. James Robinson did not disclose he had a burial voucher from Medicaid for $546 to use toward’s deceased burial. Fairmount is a private cemetery and does not accept Medicaid type payments. James Robinson stated that if the family pays or a gift to pay towards the burial would increase the cost from $5,200 because Medicaid would look at the funds as the ability to pay costs and request all state funds to be returned. At this time, another person working with James Robinson walks in the cemetery office and stating that the burial can happen today and for free. James Robinson placed a call to Evergreen Cemetery and informed me, his co-worker, and the witness that the funeral could happen this day, at no cost, and everyone had to be back at the cemetery within a half an hour. The time placed to the daughters to return to the cemetery was 2:34 pm. Family and friends had arrived by 3:00 pm and James Robinson arrived with the body at 3:17 pm in a van (not a hearse). Upon arrival, the daughters, James Robinson, and a few others went into Evergreen Cemetery office and were told to bury the deceased would cost $360 in which one of the daughters and immediate family member paid with the swipe of her credit card. James Robinson further allowed the deceased’s girlfriend to sign off on the paperwork although she did not pay any portion of the $360.
The body and procession proceed to the burial site which is in the Potter’s Field of the cemetery where there is no requirement for a casket vault and is a two-body section meaning another body would be buried on top of it. You could literally see the two caskets buried to the left of the deceased site. After the lowering of the body, James Robinson disappears. On Monday, February 3, 2020, at 8:30 pm, James Robinson’s wife, Rita, calls requesting the correct spelling of the two daughter’s names to grant excuse/absent letters for their attendance at the funeral on 01/31/2020. Mary Hawkins — Mr Robinson was very professional and provided an excellent funeral for my mother. The price was excellent and they gave her a crowing service where they placed a crown on her head. I cried it was so beautiful.
